Coco Gauff pulled off a remarkable win in the summit clash of the WTA Finals. She played her first final in the year-end event and clinched the title by overcoming Qinwen Zheng 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(7-2) in three hours and four minutes on Saturday (November 9). After the match, Gauff took a slight dig at her critics.

Although she ended the year on a high note, it wasn’t the case during the summer. Her serve became a talking point with many pundits pointing out how improving her serve will reward her with titles. There were also her doubters and their criticism only motivated her to push herself.

I just love to say I’m right. Specifically today, I got comments about how I was going to lose badly, so I was just like, ‘OK, we’ll see,’. It’s honestly just liking the idea of just proving people wrong and, and letting your racket do the talking. And so, yeah, I use it as motivation.

Coco Gauff said at the press conference (H/T: The National)

In what was the longest WTA Finals since 2008, Gauff will end the year as World No. 3 for the second time. It was also her third consecutive appearance at the WTA Finals.

Coco Gauff continues to take digs at her haters

The WTA Finals was Coco Gauff‘s third title of the season. She had a successful campaign at the ASB Classic but since then, the trophy eluded her until the China Open. During her trophyless run, she even failed to reach the summit clash of the tournaments she played. Now that she finally won a big title this season, she feels nice to silence her critics.

Also, I know tend to focus on “doubters/haters” but this one is really for all of my supporters! Ya’ll held it down for me win or lose! I thank you for that. I see you and I appreciate you. And I know some of you are a little bit petty like me so it does feel nice to silence them for a bit.

The 20-year-old not only became the first American to claim the WTA Finals since Serena Williams in 2014 but is also the youngest to lift the title since Maria Sharapova in 2004. Gauff is also the fourth American to take home the trophy before turning 21, after Williams, Chris Evert, and Tracy Austin.
