The current US Open champion, Coco Gauff, has no time to dwell on her devastating loss in the French Open semi-finals as she looks ahead to the grass-court season. The newly ranked World No. 2 is preparing herself for a busy tennis schedule with Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics around the corner.
Gauff is expected to stay busy both on and off the court this summer. The American spoke on media day at the Berlin Open, where she will be competing to warm up for Wimbledon. She shocked the world by hinting at her potential boyfriend and his attributes.
It all started because I loved reading as a kid and I kind of lost it when I got older. So at first my goal was to read 12 books, one per month. Then my boyfriend has this thing where he reads the amount of books as the year we’re in, so 24 in 2024, 23 in 2023.Coco Gauff said during media day at the Berlin Open
Gauff had already mentioned a special someone in her life back in April. Speaking to Times Magazine, the 20-year-old didn’t reveal his name, but she said that the person is from Atlanta.
So when he said he was going to read 24, I got super competitive and I doubled my goal to match his and I like trying to finish faster than him. I’m two books ahead, so I’m winning right now.Coco Gauff added
It has been an incredible turnaround for Gauff, who has experienced many highs and lows in her personal life before turning pro in 2018. As she creates the perfect blend of her professional and personal life, the tennis world wishes her the best of luck for the future.
Coco Gauff surges into the Berlin Open quarter-finals
Coco Gauff began her grass-court season on a high note with a victory over a formidable opponent, Ekaterina Alexandrova, at the ecotrans Ladies Open. The newly crowned world No. 2 overcame a challenging first-set tiebreaker and ultimately won the match 7-6 (6), 6-2, finishing in 80 minutes at Steffi Graff Stadion.
This was Gauff’s first tournament appearance since her semifinal run at Roland Garros. Despite grass being her least favored surface compared to her successes on hard courts and clay, the young star demonstrated her resilience by saving three set points against Alexandrova. This match also served as a rematch of their encounter at the 2023 Berlin tournament.
Gauff’s notable achievements include winning the 2023 US Open and reaching the 2022 Roland Garros final. Her early exit from Wimbledon previously led her to overhaul her coaching team, bringing Brad Gilbert on board. Gilbert played a pivotal role in her Grand Slam victory at Flushing Meadows last year.
With a powerful serve and versatile game, Gauff shows potential on grass courts. Her opponent, Alexandrova, who has secured two of her four titles on grass, has been enjoying a career-best season. She reached a peak ranking of No. 15 in April and notably defeated world No. 1 Iga Swiatek to reach the semifinals at the Miami Open. However, the Pole reversed the result at this year’s Roland Garros semi-finals.
