Despite her rising popularity since winning the 2023 US Open, WTA No.3 Coco Gauff revealed that she often goes unrecognized in public. Currently competing at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, she aims for her second title of the season.
However, the American star didn’t compete in the opening day of the Stuttgart Open after earning a first-round bye. After much training in the day, she had a few hours to spare. Gauff was reported to have visited the Stuttgart mall alone. Surprisingly, no fan met her for a selfie or even recognized her.
This shocking revelation comes just months after Gauff won the US Open and was viewed by more than three million people. The American also won the Auckland Open this year before reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open.
When asked about not being recognized by someone in the Stuttgart mall, she said the city does not know much about tennis players. Gauff added the same thing happens in the US, her home country.
I did do it once or twice. I don't think they know a lot of tennis players here in Stuttgart. And honestly, Europe, I don't get stopped that much. Even in the U.S. it's not that much as people think, which I'm grateful for.Coco Gauff said via Wednesday’s presser at Stuttgart
Regardless of that, most famous sports stars do not like fans barging into them in public, which is the same with Gauff.
Coco Gauff opens her clay season with a victory in Stuttgart
In Stuttgart, Coco Gauff earned her first clay victory of the season after beating fellow American Sachia Vickery to reach the quarterfinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Despite the 134th-ranked opponent proving difficult, Gauff found a way to outclass her in a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
Gauff’s 15 double faults made her fragile in the second set but Vickery could only covert seven of them, leaving the No.3 to gain some points despite losing. The third set was tightly contested as the duo fell to their faults before Gauff managed to win in the 2-hour, 26-minute match.
She will play Marta Kostyuk, who defeated Australian Open runners-up Zheng Qinwen in the second round. Gauff must learn from the Round of 16 match against Vickery as Kostyuk is a more tricky opponent.
