It turns out that winning isn’t enough for Coco Gauff as she wants a crowd, too. And probably, she’s kind of right to ask for it.
Coco Gauff launched her 2026 season at the United Cup in Perth with a commanding performance on court. Her post-match press conference, however, stole the headlines as the 21-year-old offered a candid and pointed assessment of her American fanbase.
Her take? American tennis fans are terrible at traveling. It wasn’t a subtle jab, either. It was a direct hit. Gauff said in her post-match press conference:
I’ll be honest, no. I feel like we’re definitely, in the tennis department, the worst when it comes to that. So I’ve always said, I hope, I wish our country and other places would show up throughout the world as we see like maybe smaller countries support, but I also think it’s just because of the our country is good in so many sports.

After securing a rock-solid 6-1, 6-1 victory against Argentina’s Solana Sierra and helping Team USA clinch the tie in doubles, Gauff was asked about the atmosphere. The fans might expect the standard athlete PR response, but the reigning French Open champion went off-script.
Coco Gauff showed her dominance on the court
The lack of noise in the stands clearly didn’t affect Coco Gauff’s game. If anything, she played like she had a point to prove. Coming off a massive 2025 season where she finished World No. 3 and snagged titles at the French Open and Wuhan Open, she looked every bit the veteran against Solana Sierra.

The match was essentially one-way traffic. Gauff admitted later that she felt she could play “even better,” which is terrifying for the rest of the tour, considering she dropped only two games. It was the kind of “straightforward win” that a top player wants to start a season with.
However, Team USA needed every bit of that brilliance. Taylor Fritz, usually a rock for the team, dropped his match against Sebastian Baez, leaving the tie delicately poised at 1-1. It forced Gauff to suit up again for the mixed doubles with Christian Harrison. The pair made quick work of the Argentine duo, sealing the tie 2-1 in just over an hour.
What’s next for Coco Gauff’s Team USA?
With the win over Argentina secured, the US team moves on to face Spain. Coco Gauff is slated to play Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, and you can bet she’s going to be scanning the crowd for flags.

The stakes could hardly be higher. The United Cup serves as both a key team competition and the main tune-up for the Australian Open, set to begin in mid-January. Gauff enters with a sharpened serve, renewed confidence, and clear focus, hoping her American supporters will make the trip to Perth to back her live.
Is that expectation reasonable? According to Gauff, it may be. Still, she intends to continue performing at a high level regardless. She is not the first American player to express frustration with fans either, following Danielle Collins‘ public clash with the Australian Open crowd last year.
