A visit to the Forbidden City brought Coco Gauff and Carlos Alcaraz luck as they both ended up winning the China Open, believes the WTA star. She took on Karolina Muchova in the final in Beijing on Sunday (October 6) and comfortably beat her 6-1, 6-3.
The match was different from the previous two matches she played, where she dropped the first set. After the match, an ecstatic Gauff joked that visiting the Imperial Palace probably was the reason behind her and Alcaraz’s win. Both Gauff and Alcaraz, before their respective China Open opening match, dressed in traditional clothes and explored the historic site.
Alcaraz, who arrived in Beijing following his second-round defeat at the US Open and after guiding Team Europe to the Laver Cup, easily went past his opponents until he met Jannik Sinner in the final. Alcaraz lost the first set after a tie-break but won the second and, after another tie-break in the third round, where he also won seven back-to-back points despite being down 0-3, he won his fifth title of the season.
Karolina Muchova jokes after losing China Open
Karolina Muchova will enter the Top 30 after the result against Coco Gauff. En route to the final, she defeated heavy favorite Aryna Sabalenka who arrived in Beijing following her success at the US Open. Gauff is now 3-0 against Muchova and after the match, Muchova joked that the American enjoys beating her.
The penultimate WTA 1000 event in Beijing was Gauff’s second title of the season after winning the ASB Classic earlier this year. It was also her second overall WTA 1000 title after last year’s Cincinnati Open. She has now become the youngest champion to win the event in Beijing in 14 years and the first American after Serena Williams‘ successful campaigns in 2004 and 2013.
