Botches in the ring and on the mic are both common in professional wrestling. Even the best in the business can fumble at their craft. However, when such a botch comes from the face of the WWE, that is, Cody Rhodes, it is taken a little more seriously.
The latest episode of SmackDown opened with The American Nightmare coming down to the ring to cut a promo. He talked about The Bloodline attacking him and Randy Orton on last week’s show. Rhodes emphasized the extreme circumstances that the Viper had faced before returning to WWE in 2023. The 39-year-old talked about the career-ending injury faced by the wrestling veteran. However, he mispronounced the last part of that sentence, calling it an “energury.”
Apart from this botch, he talked about his relationship with the Apex Predator. Randy Orton was not only his friend, but more than that, he was a mentor. The 14-time world champion picked him even when all the others had discarded him. Thus, he would not be standing in front of the WWE Universe as the WWE Undisputed Champion had it not been for the wrestling veteran.
The Bloodline tied him up in the ring ropes and forced him to watch as they put The Legend Killer through the announce table. He was still full of guilt due to his inability to save his mentor. To him, the former WWE Champion is his brother. Despite barely being able to walk himself, he helped Orton get up and walk backstage.

The WWE Universe heavily trolled Cody Rhodes for this botch. Several fans claimed that he should not be making such mistakes on live TV, especially given his stature in the company. This mistake was something best forgotten by the general audience.
Apart from the microphone skills, several netizens brought out criticisms against other aspects of his championship reign. Rhodes had been putting on phenomenal matches since winning the title. However, apart from AJ Styles‘ fake retirement, the storytelling in his feuds had been severely lackluster, especially when compared to that of Roman Reigns.
Others believed that the former AEW EVP should not be judged for mistakes that everyone makes. They pointed out that even some of the best mic workers in the history of the business, such as CM Punk, MJF, and Paul Heyman, have all had their fair share of fumbles. Even when one compares him to the previous champion, Roman Reigns, one must remember how far the Tribal Chief had come from his “suffering succotash” days.
