Last night was an emotional trainwreck with John Cena officially retiring from WWE at Saturday Night’s Main Event. There wouldn’t have been a single dry eye in that arena on Saturday after the 17-time world champion poetically tapped out to Gunther with a smile on his face. That shot alone is enough to make grown men cry. And Cody Rhodes is no different.
‘The American Nightmare’ was interviewed by Jackie Redmond after John Cena had returned backstage. Rhodes was choking up and tried his best to articulate his thoughts into words. The former AEW EVP said, “When it’s that good, you don’t want it to end.” ‘The QB1’ continued by affirming that Cena always went by the book in his career.
Holding back his tears, the erstwhile Stardust couldn’t help but look at those sneakers and armbands that Cena had left behind in the ring. Rhodes was bittersweet about seeing Cena finally ride off into the sunset.
‘The Prodigal Son’ also revealed that Triple H had called him to ask whether he’d like to be there in person for Cena’s last match. Rhodes consented to it in a heartbeat. How could he not?

Prior to speaking with Redmond, Cody Rhodes shared a moment with ‘The Cenation Leader’ along with CM Punk. Both Punk and Rhodes bestowed their respective world titles upon Cena for him to hold them up one last time for the fans. ‘The American Nightmare’ was one of the focal points of Cena’s retirement tour this year. Even that highly acclaimed heel turn circled around him.
Irrespective of the wayward follow-up to it, Rhodes got to wrestle ‘Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect’ at WrestleMania 41. The half-brother of Dustin Rhodes lost the WWE title to ‘The Franchise Player’ after Travis Scott helped John Cena attain the ‘never seen 17.’
Owing to that fan-repelling ending, WWE ran the match back at SummerSlam, and it was the course correction the feud needed. ‘The Prodigal Son’ reclaimed what he had lost a few months ago in a 5-star-rated classic.
Will CM Punk follow John Cena’s footsteps into retirement?
As mentioned above, CM Punk was also there in the ring with John Cena before he ultimately left his belongings in the middle of that ring and left.
If one pays attention to the moment where Punk was telling Cena to take the world title and pose with it in every corner of the arena, ‘The Best in the World’ subtly told Cena that he loved him. The latter reciprocated the feeling, which was enough to melt everyone’s hearts.

‘The Second City Saint’ later joined the post-show panel and was asked about his retirement plans. Punk admitted that even though the majority of his career is behind him, there’s still work left to do with him being the World Heavyweight Champion. Much to the delight of his fans, the Chicagoan confirmed that he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. It has certainly put those retirement rumors to rest for now.
CM Punk confirms that he has NO INTENTION to follow John Cena into retirement any time soon:

As for someone who has just lost his beloved pet dog, Larry, Punk looked alright during most of the broadcast. His wife, AJ Lee, was nowhere to be found last night. It’d be interesting to see how long it takes for her to plot a return to WWE programming after last wrestling at Survivor Series.
Punk, however, is set to return to Raw this Monday after having missed the first two episodes in December. ‘The Voice of the Voiceless’ will look to clap back at Bron Breakker after the latter has verbally dismissed Punk’s threat of late. They will meet for the world title on the January 5 edition of Raw at the Barclays Center in New York.
