Cody Rhodes has become an undisputed face of the company, in fact, he was, even when he wasn’t a world champion. Some might even argue that he is following in the footsteps of John Cena, who shouldered WWE for over 20 years as the company’s cornerstone. The American Nightmare expressed his desire to face his idol before he finally hung up his boots.
He was one of the superstars who attended Fanatics Fest in New York City. When a fan asked him about facing John Cena during his retirement tour, Cody Rhodes didn’t rule out the possibility. The American Nightmare stated that he is a man of his word, and next year would truly be his farewell. Rhodes even admitted to learning a lot from Cena when they were travel partners for almost a year.
The Undisputed WWE Champion further added that it would be an honor to fight the 16-time world champion. Rhodes even called him the greatest wrestler of all time, giving him the respect he truly deserves. Both superstars share a special connection, as The Leader of the Cenation returned at WrestleMania XL to help him finish his story.
We get to live in this era, he’s definitely a man of his word. When he says it’s farewell, it truly is farewell. I drove John around for a year and I learned everything I possibly could. Didn’t realize I was learning so much at the time. It would be the honor of my life to wrestle John Cena in any capacity. He’s the GOAT for a reason.Cody Rhodes on John Cena at the Fanatics Fest
The Doctor of Thuganomics made it clear that 2025 will be his final year as a wrestler. He will compete in his last Elimination Chamber, Royal Rumble, and WrestleMania. Meanwhile, Rhodes will continue his journey at Bash in Berlin, where he will defend his world title against his close friend Kevin Owens. It will be intriguing to see who walks out as the world champion on August 31.
Vince Russo claimed that WWE ruined Cody Rhodes’ world title reign
Countless fans were thrilled when Cody Rhodes defeated Roman Reigns at WrestleMania XL, finally finishing the story. However, since then, many have felt that his title reign has been a bit underwhelming. At least that’s how Vince Russo feels, as he ranted about WWE not building credible opponents for The American Nightmare.
While speaking on his podcast, Writing with Russo, he expressed extreme disappointment that Rhodes’ title reign hasn’t been high-profile. The wrestling veteran stated that the 39-year-old star had to engage in makeshift feuds with AJ Styles, Logan Paul, and Solo Sikoa. Since WrestleMania XL, he has defended his title four times.
He finishes the story. He has no opponents. They built no opponents for him. He had to wrestle AJ, he had to wrestle Logan Paul, he's got no opponents. They build nobody for the guy.Vince Russo on Cody Rhodes’ title reign via Writing With Russo
Fans expected him to defend his title against some of the top stars in the company, like Randy Orton or possibly even The Rock. However, the lack of competition for his title has diminished his reign in the eyes of many. Only time will tell what the future holds for Rhodes as world champion.
