“That’s John’s thing,” Cody Rhodes reveals one big WWE on-air rule that only John Cena is allowed to break
Despite being hailed as the current face of WWE, Cody Rhodes is hellbent on not leveraging it to break a major rule, as an ode to John Cena.

WWE has been historically stringent about adhering to some of its on-screen cues, most of which were prevalent during the Vince McMahon regime. Despite Triple H loosening up the strings as the creative lead, one rule has stayed its course. Cody Rhodes revealed that the said rule is only for John Cena to break.
During a recent interview with SPORTbible, Rhodes talked about the practice of talking into the camera in WWE. Rhodes affirmed that John does it. Cena’s entrance would be amiss if he weren’t to give a shoutout to Stu, the cameraman who runs with the 16-time World Champion all the way down that aisle to the ring. It has been like that for years, and Cody doesn’t want anyone else to emulate John.
The Undisputed WWE Champion admitted that wrestlers do get caught cutting promos directly into the camera, though it’s rare. Cody didn’t flinch while confessing that he’s himself done it at some point, but advocated for the unsaid rule to remain exclusive to The Cenation Leader. Rhodes also spoke about one major rule that WWE finally got rid of after Vince was axed.
There was a time when these superstars were bound to peep into the monitors only sideways. It was the McMahon rule. The former AEW EVP further alluded to the leeway he enjoyed in terms of defying some pre-existing verbiage when he returned to WWE at WrestleMania 38.
Cody was the first to use words like “belt” instead of championships or titles. Moreover, he also referred to WWE Superstars as wrestlers during a Miz TV segment on Raw that caught the fans off guard, as Vince McMahon had banned it long ago.
What does Cody Rhodes think of facing John Cena down the road?
There’s still a plethora of fans who haven’t been able to wrap their heads around the fact that John Cena is retiring soon. As announced previously, the 47-year-old will embark on a retirement tour.
While he’d face a number of superstars during that window, there’s certainly a chance that the Peacemaker star will run into Cody Rhodes as well. The Prodigal Son has long yearned to have that one last dance with Cena before he calls it a day on his illustrious career.
A few weeks ago, Rhodes was asked what it’d mean to him if he ended up wrestling John as part of the latter’s farewell tour. Cody said it would be the honor of his life to share the ring with whom he considers the greatest of all time.
