Cody Rhodes becomes the first Crown Jewel Champion (via WWE and X)
WWE recently crowned the first-ever men’s Crown Jewel Champion in Riyadh following a champion vs. champion match featuring Cody Rhodes and Gunther. This rivalry had evolved beyond the superficial prize and became personal in a very short amount of time. Being one of the most hyped matches heading into Crown Jewel, this match-up rightfully main-evented the show.
The match began with plenty of rest holds, but the crowd was still very hot for these two superstars. Gunther eventually started targeting Rhodes’ back, which gave out several times during the match. Although it looked over for the WWE Undisputed Champion at one point, the crowd hyping him up gave him the energy to fight back into this match.
The World Heavyweight Champion had promised earlier in the night that he would put his opponent to sleep, and he had every intention of keeping that promise. Although he went for the sleeper hold multiple times, Rhodes slithered out and escaped each time.
Towards the end of the match, the American Nightmare went for a Cody Cutter from the top of the turnbuckle. Gunther caught him with another sleeper hold, but Rhodes rolled over and barely held his opponent down for the three-count.

After the match, the two competitors shook hands in a mutual show of respect. Similar to the ending of the Women’s Crown Jewel Championship match, Triple H also came out to present the diamond-crusted belt to the inaugural champion. Furthermore, a crowning ceremony took place at the post-show event for both Rhodes and Liv Morgan.
Cody Rhodes reveals why he got his first security detail
One of the biggest moments in Cody Rhodes‘ career took place on September 1st, 2018, when the original All In event was held. This show eventually led to the formation of AEW and The American Nightmare being made the company’s EVP. However, the 39-year-old went through a major physical incident just a day prior.
In an interview on Flagrant, Rhodes narrated a story that took place on the night before the first All In. He was walking his dog, Pharoah, without a leash when a man interrupted him. He claimed that it was dangerous to walk his dog without it and got in the Raw superstar’s personal space. The WWE Undisputed Champion pushed him away, and he took a huge fall into a nearby bush.
The next day was the first day in my career that I had a security detail. My wife [Brandi Rhodes], ‘You do not leave this room without this man.’ His name was Sam. ‘Sam is going everywhere with you.’ Like I was a problem child all along. It was one incident over our dog. They put me on a leash. I got to the building, but it was touch and go.

Rhodes sorted things out with the man, and thankfully, he did not press charges. From the next day onwards, his wife, Brandi Rhodes, instructed him not to go anywhere without his bodyguard, and this was the first time he had ever gotten one. Thankfully, the former AEW EVP made it to the show unscathed. He followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming the NWA Champion at the show after beating Nick Aldis.
