The fans saw a slightly different, though edgy, side of Cody Rhodes on this week’s SmackDown. He was originally slated to defend his Undisputed WWE title against the winner of Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu at Saturday Night’s Main Event on November 1. But just before the scheduled main event on SmackDown, the cameras spotted Fatu grounded in anguish backstage.

‘The Samoan Werewolf’ got taken out by an anonymous figure, and upon a close look, he was leaking blood from the mouth. GM Nick Aldis called for immediate medical attention, and it didn’t take long for Drew McIntyre to make his entrance right after that.

The Scot grabbed a microphone and started cracking jokes about Fatu. He even asked the referee to raise his hand as the rightful No. 1 contender to Rhodes’ world title. Just then, Aldis came out and berated the ‘Scottish Warrior’ under suspicion of being Fatu’s attacker.

McIntyre affirmed that he had nothing to do with the former US Champ’s ambush and urged the general manager to be unlike everyone else backstage by not favoring “Corporate Cody.” Just then, the ‘American Nightmare’ came screaming out and was irate at the fact that the people of San Jose were screwed out of Fatu vs. McIntyre.

The former AEW EVP eventually made the proposal to defend his WWE title against the Scot right there. Before Aldis could make it official, Rhodes and McIntyre got into a brawl and fought all over the arena before making it back to the ring, where the bell finally rang. ‘The Prodigal Son’ was still in his suit and didn’t bother taking it off.

In an unexpected end to the match, Rhodes decked McIntyre’s head with the WWE Championship at ringside in a move that reeked of desperation. The erstwhile Stardust hooked his foe for a Cross Rhodes over the commentary table, but security pulled them apart. A resilient Rhodes still found a way to dive off the top rope over McIntyre to end the show.

Who attacked Jacob Fatu, leading to explosive Cody Rhodes/Drew McIntyre shenanigans on SmackDown?

As evident by that catastrophic ending to SmackDown, things are far from over between Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre. They’re likely to meet again in two weeks at Saturday Night’s Main Event for the Undisputed WWE title. ‘The Scottish Psychopath’ wouldn’t want to replicate the downers of Wrestlepalooza again. The feud has gone up a notch after what transpired on SmackDown last night.

However, that shouldn’t undermine the mystery behind Jacob Fatu‘s backstage assault. If it’s not McIntyre, as WWE is making it seem like, then who could be the culprit? Some netizens are under the belief that Randy Orton might have snapped and taken Fatu out.

‘The Viper’ was nowhere to be found on the show elsewhere. Signs also point toward Rhodes as someone who’s pretending as a babyface, and instead, he’s the one who attacked Fatu.

A minor section of fans has started wondering if he were to turn heel, this could be a way to do it. Orton, being the mastermind, could pave the way for his rumored heel turn to line him up for a big-time feud with Rhodes down the line.

Fatu is going to be sidelined for an extended period of time, as recently reported by BodySlam. The former Bloodline member is dealing with a non-wrestling injury, which turns out to be a dental issue. Something that would concern his fans is the fact that the 33-year-old is expected to remain inactive early in the next year.

The hope within WWE would be to prevent Fatu from missing WrestleMania 42. He hasn’t been used significantly ever since his differences with Solo Sikoa were settled in the ring post SummerSlam. It’d be interesting to see what storyline he finds himself in upon returning.
