Former UFC welterweight title challenger Colby Covington is known for his outspoken personality. Throughout his UFC career, ‘Chaos’ has been involved in several heated rivalries with notable fighters in the promotion. One of the most significant feuds of his career was with former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

In an interesting development, two UFC welterweight fighters, Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman, recently met at an event. The details of the setting where they encountered each other are still unknown. Despite their past animosity, Covington and Usman seemed to be in good spirits as they exchanged a few words. However, their conversation was brief, as Covington was in the middle of a live interview.

The feud between Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman primarily stemmed from the nature of their competition. While the Nigerian fighter was the reigning champion, the American fighter emerged as the top contender. The two UFC welterweights faced each other in the Octagon on two occasions. However, on both occasions, Covington was unable to defeat Usman.

Amid their UFC fighting setups, both Covington and Usman frequently exchanged verbal jabs at one another. The Nigerian fighter, in particular, often dismissed Covington’s credibility as an MMA fighter, believing that he posed no real threat on the UFC roster. Despite this, the American fighter remains a hot commodity and is considered a great matchup by many in the community.

Michael Bisping names a potential opponent for Colby Covington’s next fight outing

Colby Covington had an impressive start in the UFC, but his current performance is concerning. The former UFC welterweight title challenger is on a two-fight losing streak. Most recently, he suffered a brutal defeat to rising prospect Joaquin Buckley at UFC Tampa in December 2024. This raises the question of who Covington should face next in the promotion.

Covington recently voiced his desire to move up a weight class and fight fellow trash-talker Sean Strickland. However, UFC legend Michael Bisping has another opponent in mind for Covington. In a recent podcast discussion with Paul Felder, Bisping suggested a potential matchup between Covington and UFC lightweight veteran Dustin Poirier.

Perennial contender at welterweight, grudge match, big name—Colby Covington at the end of his career as well, respectfully. You know, I think it makes sense. Of course, Colby’s going to be a little bigger being a welterweight, but Dustin is probably not that much smaller. He wouldn’t have to cut weight, he could take more damage, his chin would be better, and he’d be a little bit stronger. Two big stars, big names, pay-per-view.

Since Poirier announced his potential retirement fight, he has received significant attention and numerous fight proposals. Notably, even Covington appears eager to challenge the UFC lightweight fighter. However, Poirier has yet to respond to those callouts from the welterweight fighter. It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold.
