Due to their history, the NBA, the NFL, MLB, and the NHL are the ‘Big Four’ in the US. Despite being relatively younger, the UFC has become the fastest-growing in the nation, with only the NFL ahead of them in viewership. One of the reasons for this is Dana White‘s presence as the head honcho of the UFC, and many fighters, including Colby Covington, can attest to that.
Moreover, the Big Four sports leagues have become a hotbed for activism and woke politics. That is not the case for the UFC. If the Big Four has a left-leaning stance, the UFC has a centrist or right-leaning one. Unlike the Big Four, where athletes face censorship and bans, the UFC athletes face no such worries. On his appearance on the Twins Pod podcast, Colby Covington revealed why it is.
You know, because Dana White is our head. You know, he's the biggest proponent of free speech and constitutional rights in America. He's not going to put a muzzle on anybody like the NFL or the NBA players where their owners tell them, 'Hey, you can't speak against this.'Colby Covington via Twins Pod
Covington cited the example of Kyrie Irving, who faced bans in the NBA after he refused Covid-19 vaccination. The UFC welterweight stated he disagreed with Irving’s political beliefs but sided with Iriving on his stance on the vaccine mandates.
Covington has not fought since he lost to Leon Edwards at UFC 296. He has beefed with Ian Garry for some time now. Garry recently urged Covington to sign the contract to be on the co-main event of UFC 303. Headlined by Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler, the potential addition of Garry and Covington could make the fans extra excited for UFC 303.
Colby Covington praises Dana White and the UFC brass
Colby Covington turned heel after he got wind of the UFC’s plan to cut him from the roster. That move was a masterstroke as he bagged three undisputed title shots and even became an interim welterweight champion.
Despite the promotion’s plan to cut him, UFC has become a loyal company man after he turned heel. He lavished praise on the promotion and the UFC brass whenever he got an opportunity. As such, it was no wonder he spoke highly of Dana White and Hunter Campbell on the Twins Pod podcast.
One of the smartest people I've ever met in my life. He's (Dana White) just so intelligent, the way his brain thinks. I mean, the guy is just such a business-minded guy, and he's trying to find the next edge and the next business that he can build up. So, you know, he just started his new league, the Power Slap, and now that's like one of the most viral things on the internet. People are excited about it...He owns that, yeah. Him and, you know, Hunter Campbell, yeah, that's his company.Colby Covington via Twins Pod
Even though Covington spoke highly of White, the UFC CEO was critical of Covington’s performance against Edwards. However, White did reveal the increase in sales of PPV after Covington’s offensive trash talk about Edwards’ deceased father.
