Cole Alexander bids emotional farewell as he parts ways with club Odisha FC

Odisha FC and Cole Alexander have decided to mutually part ways after only a year together, as both parties came to an agreement over an undisclosed release fee, which enabled Cole and Odisha to trigger a mutual termination of the contract.

Alexander, the 32-year-old South African midfielder had signed for the Bhubaneswar-based side ahead of the 2020-21 season of the Hero Indian Super League.

Cole had a productive ISL season with Odisha, scoring three quality goals over the course of the tournament and had an industrious personal campaign, which was defined by his innate work rate and desire, and was also one of the captains for the club in that campaign.

Alexander who is born in Cape Town, spent his youth footballing career at Hellenic FC and Ajax Cape Town, before he made his senior professional debut for the latter.

Alexander, who is definitely a work horse in the midfield with loads of stamina, has also represented other South African clubs such as Vasco Da Gama, Chippa United, Polokwane City and SuperSport United in his senior days.

The 31-year-old who is also South African national team member, was one of the standout performers for Bidvest Wits in the South African Premier League in the 2019-20 season before coming to India.

“I want to thank everyone at Odisha FC for the opportunity. Thanks to all my teammates, it was a privilege to be with the side and play with you guys. It was a joy being in India experiencing different cultures. This was a difficult decision to make but this is for my family so that I can be with them.” Alexander said in his emotional farewell to the club and the fans.

Alexander had a fruitful 2020-21 season with Odisha in the ISL

“But, I will continue supporting Odisha FC from where I am in South Africa. I will always have a special place in my heart for the Club and all the fans of Odisha FC. I hope one day we can get to work together again. It was such a pleasure to be at Odisha FC. Thank you for everything,” Cole concluded, expressing his gratitude.

“On behalf of Odisha Football Club, I would like to thank Cole for his contributions last season. A popular figure amongst the players, staff and supporters we wish him and his family all the best and hope to one day see him back in an Odisha jersey.” Odisha FC club president Mr. Raj Athwal commented on Cole’s contributions to the club.

With Cole now a free agent, he is possibly linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs.
