Travis Hunter is a name that symbolizes excellence on both sides of the ball, having won the 2024 Heisman Trophy. While it’s not uncommon for college football players to play two positions, the NFL has never seen a player maintain such a dual role over its century-and-half history. That’s why, as Hunter advocates to make history, Colin Cowherd has raised an issue with it.
While his top draft projection remains undisputed, there have been debates about whether the standout player should pursue playing on the offensive side as a wide receiver or choose the defensive side as a cornerback. Some analysts have even advised the 21-year-old to leverage his top ranking in the Class of 2025 to continue his dual role which he dominated in collegiate football.
NFL analyst Cowherd, of course, isn’t one of them. During the recent episode of The Colin Cowherd Podcast, he expressed skepticism on the feasibility of playing both ways in the NFL.
Just playing corner alone, think of the wide receivers in the NFL. The talent on a weekly basis… you’re chasing those guys for 60-70 snaps… then you would try to play full-time wide receiver? I think it’s impossible on the body.. [he] needs to focus on one [position]… [and] he’s making the right decision…at corner.
Colin Cowherd argued
This play of Travis Hunter turning into a WR while playing CB is insane 🔥

Colin Cowherd believes cornerback is the way to go for Travis Hunter
While claiming that playing both sides would be a problem for the Colorado superstar, Cowherd argued that he should choose the defensive side. If Hunter were to focus solely on playing wide receiver, the analyst claimed it could potentially hinder his career.
I would put him at corner, but he wants to be a receiver I don’t know if he’s a No. 1 receiver in the NFL, maybe on a weaker team he’s certainly good enough, but you can’t be a No. 1 receiver if you have a young quarterback who’s trying to get reps confidence and timing.
Colin Cowherd added further

The Heisman Trophy winner finished his collegiate football career with a standout season recording 35 tackles, 11 pass defenders, four interceptions, and one forced fumble. On the offense, he posted 96 receptions, 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns.
