Colin Cowherd slams Jerry Jones’ potential Cowboys head coaching hire: “Fall of a great American institution”
Jerry Jones and the Cowboys favoring offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as the next Cowboys head coach baffled FOX Sports' Colin Cowherd.

Colin Cowherd could not believe his eyes and ears after hearing that Jerry Jones and the Cowboys front office have singled out offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as the favorite for the head coaching job. The host of the Herd thought it was one of the worst hires ever by an NFL team.
During Thursday’s episode, Cowherd read that the Cowboys who parted ways with Mike McCarthy earlier this year, may potentially appoint Schottenheimer as the head coach. Cowherd announced this move is similar to renouncing that the Cowboys are no longer the ‘America’s Team.’
After torching Jones’ continuous bad decisions, bringing the level at the Cowboys down, Cowherd switched his focus to Schottenheimer’s history in the NFL. The 51-year-old has bounced around to several teams, fulfilling various roles, but has never been a head coach before. He joined the Cowboys in 2023 after Kellen Moore left. Jones appointed him as the offensive coordinator, but McCarthy called most of the plays.

Cowherd compared the Cowboys’ current state with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Shad Khan’s team has been in the doldrums for a better part of the decade, but they don’t have the limelight shining on them like the Cowboys, which is the most profitable brand in sports.
Even the Jaguars managed to find a coaching candidate like the Buccaneers OC Liam Cohen, who helped Baker Mayfield back on his feet once again.
Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones fighting over Brian Schottenheimer
The Cowboys’ dysfunctionality is nothing new for their fans. Jones has previously said that he will not give up the general manager post. At the same time, he can’t ignore the words of Stephen Jones, the executive vice president.
According to inside sources, there’s a tension brewing between the two. While Stephen favors Schottenheimer, Jerry wants experienced heads Pete Carroll or Deion Sanders in the building as the head coach.
Here’s the deal. No unanimous decision yet in Dallas. There have been informal talks and “picking of brains” from the likes of Pete Carroll, Deion Sanders and there was even a chat with Rich Bissacia. Brian Schottenheimer seems to have the most steam but things remain fluid.…

Schottenheimer worked under Carroll when the two were part of the Seattle Seahawks, and reuniting them makes sense. On the flip side, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is a massive admirer of Schottenheimer, which could play a big part in making the final decision.
