Being the son of famed Dallas Cowboys legend, Deion Sanders, there had been a huge hype revolving around Shedeur Sanders for a very long time. The hype escalated to such an extent that people started talking about him possibly getting drafted No.1 overall. Nevertheless, the hype has subsided into a draft stock tanking with Sanders going from top three to out of the top ten in some mock drafts.

The draft stock sinking comes with concerns over playing style and whether he can deliver in the NFL under immense pressure. However, the whole lot is not against Sanders. Sports analyst Colin Cowherd pushed back against the idea that Shedeur Sanders is an overrated NFL prospect.

The Herd host recently addressed comparisons between Sanders and Daniel Jones, the former New York Giants quarterback who failed to live up to his draft selection.

Cowherd firmly rejected the notion that Shedeur is another Jones, pointing out the stark differences in talent and draft stock.

Daniel Jones was a controversial sixth-round pick who failed to deliver for the New York Giants. Apart from a single 2022 season, Daniel Jones played terribly throughout his career before ultimately parting ways last year despite a huge contract running. Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders is widely lauded as one of the best quarterbacks in the upcoming draft class without any doubt.

Shedeur Sanders is the consensus number two quarterback in this draft. It’s not like Daniel Jones when the Giants picked him sixth—most people didn’t think he was a first-round quarterback. Shedeur is the second-most talented quarterback in this draft.

Shedeur Sanders could be a talent that teams who skip fail to realize

Shedeur Sanders’ college stats are nothing short of a top-notch quarterback. He recorded 4,134 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and a 75.5 QBR- enough to lock him as a top NFL Draft pick.

Colin Cowherd believes Shedeur is facing similar unwarranted skepticism. Critics say his success came under Deion Sanders’ system, but elite quarterbacks often thrive in well-structured college offenses. Cowherd noted that amidst all the external noise, everyone is trying to pick apart what Sanders is trying to do.

People get paralyzed by Shedeur Sanders being overrated. I think you’re undervaluing what he’s going to try to do… Who’s not overdrafted in the NFL at quarterback? Joe Burrow was a consensus pick, but now it looks like Trevor Lawrence was overdrafted. Everybody gets questioned. When Lamar came out, people thought he was overdrafted—some even thought he should be a wide receiver. You can’t worry about that.

Cowherd argued

Drafting quarterbacks is rarely an exact science, and teams often reach for potential over certainty. Joe Burrow was a consensus first-overall pick, yet skeptics questioned whether he was a one-year wonder. Lamar Jackson, despite winning the Heisman Trophy, was doubted so much that he fell to the last pick of the first round. Even Patrick Mahomes wasn’t seen as a surefire superstar when he was drafted 10th overall. On the other hand, Brock Purdy was drafted as Mr. Irrelevant.

For quarterback-needy teams like the New York Giants, the real risk isn’t drafting Sanders—it’s passing on him and watching another team develop him into a star.
