The Texas Longhorns and the Washington Huskies will face each other in the 2023 CFP Semifinals at the Sugar Bowl. It has taken a while for both teams to reach this far into the college football season. Texas played a postseason bowl game way back in 2009; Washington’s most recent tie came in 2016.

While the Huskies had a spotless 2023 season, for the Longhorns, that’s far from it. They have had to overcome a few obstacles in their path; however, when they are firing all cylinders, they are a championship-worthy side. The double-digit win over Alabama in Week 2 is a prime example of how deadly this team can be.

Yet it will be a hard task even for them to get the better of a Huskies team that loves to attack. Heisman finalist Michael Penix Jr. led the nation in passing last season, and he could emulate that form against Texas. He has had all the necessary tools in his arsenal to lead the Huskies to a national championship since 1991.

Why can the Washington Huskies win?

Penix is the obvious reason the Huskies are in the post-season. He is tied for the top mark in the nation with 33 completions of 15 or more air yards beyond the sticks. Besides him, there is Rome Odunze, who just missed being named the best receiver in the country. He was in the mix for a good reason. Odunze recorded 1,428 yards receiving in 13 games.

That’s just one piece of a massive jigsaw that can dismantle Texas. His wide receiver partner, Ja’Lynn Polk, has 1,000 yards. Moreover, Jalen McMillan is fully healthy and had more than 131 receiving yards in the PAC 12 Championship win over Oregon. Besides, their running back, Dillon Johnson, was in red-hot form before the season ended. He had crossed the 100 rushing yards on four occasions. They will be backed by their 2023 Joe Moore Award-winning offensive line.

Why can the Texas Longhorns win?

Similar to the Huskies, the driving force in Texas is their quarterback, Qwinn Ewers. In the Bama win, the Ewers threw for 349 yards and three touchdowns, sending shock waves through the entire college football scene. That wasn’t the only notable win for the Longhorns. They outclassed their local rivals, Texas Tech (57-7), and the Oklahoma State Sooners (49-21).

Ewers will not be alone in his venture to beat the Huskies. Ja’Tavion Sanders and Adonai Mitchell will be right next to him. The Longhorns cover an average of 475.9 yards per game, and Washington is not comfortable whenever the opposition puts too much pressure on them.
