The bye week came at the wrong time for Deion Sanders‘ Colorado Buffaloes. Not only did it kill off their momentum from the win over Iowa State, but they also suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of the Utah Utes.

Colorado returned to action on Saturday night to take on the University of Utah football team, which was coming off a defeat against rivals BYU, and also missing starting quarterback Devon Dampier.

Utah Utes replaced Dampier with freshman quarterback Byrd Ficklin. The three-star quarterback had come on as the reliever for Dampier in the previous fixtures, but the week nine bout against Colorado marked his full debut for the Utes.

Ficklin made his selection count. He gave Utah a 43-0 lead at halftime.

The onslaught began with a 63-yard run on the second play of the game. Running back Wayshawn Parker added a 58-yard rushing touchdown.

Ficklin threw multiple touchdown passes to his receivers in the second quarter. First, a 22-yard pass to JJ Buchanan, and then a 20-yard dime to Larry Simmons two minutes before the break.

In between, the Muskogee High School graduate set up backup RB NaQuari Rogers for a 2-yard run to add insult to injury.

Liberty transfer, Kaidon Salter struggled through the first two quarters. At the half, the Buffaloes had -18 passing yards.

The Buffs’ performance did not improve after the break. Utah took advantage through kicker Dillon Curtis, who scored a third three-pointer of the game from four tries.

Coach Sanders took off Salters for the final quarter and sent in Ryan Staub. The veteran scored the only positive points for Colorado around the nine-minute mark by rushing for one yard.

Staub’s score was a mere blip in the big picture. Utah extended its gap even further three minutes before the final whistle through RB Nate Johnson, who scored after covering 56 yards on the ground. The game ended in a 7-53 victory for Utah.

Utah outgained Colorado by 587-140 total yards (422 rushing yards for Utah). The Utes recorded zero turnovers to Colorado’s one.

This will go down as one of the worst losses in Deion Sanders‘ fledgling coaching career. Moreover, this beatdown was Colorado’s worst defeat since getting pummeled 70-14 by the Oregon Ducks in 2012.

Sanders took the blame on himself at the post-game presser.

This is bad. It’s probably the worst beating I’ve ever had, except for when my momma whooped me as a kid. 422 yards rushing, you’re not winning… Total offense 140 yards, you’re not winning. [Allowing] 587 yards of total offense, you’re not winning with that. Special teams gave up a fake punt as well… All three phases, we got our butts kicked.

Regardless of how the Utah game finished, Sanders and the Buffaloes have to quickly snap out of the gloom and focus on winning the remaining games. It will not be easy as they face tough opposition like Arizona, Arizona State, Kansas State, and West Virginia.
