The Indianapolis Colts had hoped that they would ride out this season with Daniel Jones as their QB and then make decisions about their future. Now, they are forced to come up with all possible options, with a certain Philip Rivers entering the fray.
It so happens that after Jones ended his season early after rupturing his Achilles tendon, the Colts have been left with just rookie quarterback Riley Leonard as their lone option.
They lost Anthony Richardson to injured reserve after the raw prospect fractured the orbital bone in his eye. Since it will be a while before he returns, the franchise has now been forced to look elsewhere.
They could call the New York Giants and ask if Russell Wilson is available, as the Super Bowl champion QB is merely a backup at the moment. It seems even that is not enough for head coach Shane Steichen.
The Colts are planning to bring potential Hall of Fame QB Philip Rivers into their facility Tuesday to work out to see if he may join their practice squad… This is real. Daniel Jones’ season is over, Riley Leonard will start, but Rivers may be an option.

Of the options available, it seems Steichen is going with someone he is comfortable with. After having spent 6 seasons with the NC State alum, the Colts’ head coach seems to prefer continuity.

He might believe that he has a better chance of being able to execute what he wants through a 44-year-old quarterback in Philip Rivers, who last played in the league 5 years ago.
Shane Steichen might not have a choice other than calling up Philip Rivers
For someone who left the game five seasons ago, it will be a challenge to get back both physically and mentally. But if he can prove that he can play, Shane Steichen might be willing to take the chance.
After all, it is not that he has an option. Backup QB Riley Leonard is also struggling with an injury. He suffered a knee injury in the same game that the Colts lost Daniel Jones for the season.
No one has a clear answer on whether he will be able to take the field in Week 15. The rookie QB might hope to do so, as it is the best chance for him to prove his worth, but his health will decide his fate.
After the Colts lost Daniel Jones (Achilles), backup QB Riley Leonard suffered a knee injury Sunday vs. the Jaguars that leaves his status for Week 15 up in the air, head coach Shane Steichen announced.

With Anthony Richardson out, the former Notre Dame alum could continue from where he left his college career, with sure-footed performances that helped his program reach the CFP National Championship game.
Mina Kimes reminds everyone how old Philip Rivers is with epic troll
If Philip Rivers indeed signs with the Indianapolis Colts, he will have to leave his family behind in his hometown of Alabama, at least until the end of the first week of January 2026.

That means the 8-time Pro Bowler will not be able to see his wife and their 10 children for a month. Keeping this in mind, ESPN’s Mina Kimes decided to write this on X.
Philip Rivers’ oldest kid is almost the same age as Riley Leonard.
Mina Kimes wrote
The analyst has a point, as Rivers’ oldest child, daughter Halle, is 23, the same age as the rookie QB who would be his teammate if he makes the roster.

Moreover, Philip Rivers is also a grandfather. The chance to lace up in the NFL might be too much to let go, especially when he has a large, wholesome family and is the head coach of St. Michael Catholic HS, Alabama.
