The Washington Commanders are yet to name their starting quarterback for the upcoming NFL season. But it appears that if the 2024 season is to happen today, the franchise will most likely go with rookie Jayden Daniels, whom they drafted using the No. 2 overall pick.
Head coach Dan Quinn has addressed the question of starting quarterback several times and each time, he claimed both Daniels and Marcus Mariota haven’t yet proved themselves worthy enough to take up the responsibilities that come with the position. But in addition to that, there’s one more thing that Quinn has been addressing: Daniels’ progress in the offseason.
In a recent interview with Jim Rome Show, the Commanders’ head coach praised the second-overall pick for the way he handled his initial weeks with the franchise. He claimed although the rookie does not lack the hunger of a young player to thrive, he also has the traits of a veteran player.
I think I said it recently and I think this sums it up right: He has the humility and kind of the hunger of the young player — ‘I’ve got a lot to prove, I’ve still got a lot to learn. But he also has the swagger and calmness of a veteran player. So I think those 50-plus starts from ASU and LSU, that seems to come about.said coach Dan Quinn
Quinn further appreciated the rookie quarterback for his hard work in learning the new playing system and also highlighted how the Commanders are headed for the upcoming NFL season with a relatively new team, which he believes has been a great collective learning experience in the offseason.
Commanders give Jayden Daniels access to facilities
The Commanders reportedly have quite high expectations from their rookie quarterback and before they push him on the field carrying the weight offense, they need to test Daniels properly. That’s one of the reasons why they are not rushing in to name their starting quarterback.
Till then, the quarterback is working until every bone of his body gets tired. Head coach Quinn gave him an access key to the rookie to access all of the Commanders’ facilities at any time he preferred.
The reigning Heisman Trophy winner has been practicing in the early mornings by entering the premises at five in the morning to study and analyze his opponents’ weaknesses and strengths along with working on his own.
