The Washington Commanders are entering a new era under a new ownership and head coach, Dan Quinn. As part of that new era, comes a new quarterback and several other players as they look to return to prominence. With all these changes comes the desire to create a new identity for the franchise. For starters, Quinn is embracing wearing his hat backward, something former OC Eric Bieniemy banned.
Wearing a hat backward is a trend that used to be associated with hip-hop music and skateboarding back in the late 90s. But over the years, the reverse cap trend has waned. For Dan Quinn, it is a matter of personal taste. Something he probably acquired when seeing similarly aged reverse cap icons Jay-Z and Fred Durst don the style.
But before joining the Washington Commanders he did not know that former offensive coordinator and assistant head coach Eric Bieniemy had imposed a ban on the style. He felt that real men do not wear their hats backward. Something Colin Cowherd also made recently clear.
However, his team is embracing the style. As per Candace Buckner of the Washington Post, they feel it shows his individual ‘swag’. That thirst for individuality could help the team on their way to establishing their own identity.
Dan Quinn has the opportunity to build a new legacy for himself
In general, when a new head coach gets hired, he will be facing questions from the existing owner and GM. To add to that, he will be tasked to bring out the best from the existing group of players with a few additions. Something he has experienced when coaching the Atlanta Falcons.
However, this time around, Dan Quinn is in an interesting situation. Not only is the GM new, but owner Josh Harris is also just a year into his control over the franchise. Effectively giving Quinn the chance to establish his philosophy on the team. One more benefit unlike what he had with the Falcons is that Dan Quinn will have a rookie quarterback in Jayden Daniels at the most important position.
Therefore, the scenario is the literal definition of a clean slate. Dan Quinn can establish himself over the long run as one of the better head coaches in the league.
