Who would have thought a rookie, who started the 2024 season with a loss, would leave every eye astounded by advancing his team to the Conference championship game? But, Jayden Daniels defied all odds as he led the Washington Commanders to a commanding 45-31 victory over NFC’s No. 1 seed, the Detroit Lions, in a historic playoff upset.
The Commanders turned improbable into reality as they ended the third-longest playoff win drought with a spectacular victory in the Wild-Card round last week. They did not allow their momentum to falter, advancing to the conference championship game for the first time since 1992, the year they celebrated victory in Super Bowl XXVI.
As significant as this milestone is for the Commanders, it casts a long shadow on their divisional rival, the Dallas Cowboys, who now hold the record for the longest active drought in the NFC Championship game. Every NFC team except for Jerry Jones’ Cowboys has played in the conference championship game since 1996.
The Cowboys’ last appearance in the critical playoff round was in 1995 when they succeeded in winning the Vince Lombardi Trophy as well. However, since then, the team has consistently fallen short in postseason play despite having a talented roster. Dallas concluded this season also with a disappointing 7-10 record, finishing third in the NFC East division.
With Washington’s win tonight, every NFC team other than the Dallas Cowboys now will have played in a conference championship game going back to the 1996 season.

The Cowboys last NFC title game appearance was 1995.
As for the Commanders, they now await their opponent for next week’s conference championship game, which will be determined by the upcoming clash between the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles.
Rookie Jayden Daniels stuns Lions with unstoppable performance
The 2024 second-overall pick slayed the Lions in their home, Ford Field, where head coach Dan Campbell was confident about his team’s capability. Even though the Lions went prepared for the threat Daniels possessed, they couldn’t overpower the rookie. Every time they attempted to close the gap, he stepped up and ensured his team’s victory remained intact.
Despite playing in a hostile environment, the young quarterback did not get agitated. Instead, he remained calm and completed the game with 299 yards and two touchdowns. All eyes are on them now as they head towards the upcoming challenge, where there’s a likely possibility of facing a divisional rival.
