The NFC East’s Washington Commanders put an end to their worst storyline of the offseason. The Commanders, looking to better their splendid performance from last year, ended their standoff with Terry McLaurin by signing him to a three-year, $96 million deal.
The issue started in the middle of July when McLaurin first notified the management of his slight dissatisfaction about the lack of advancement on the contract extension. The WR emphasized his commitment to Washington, noting that he and his wife purchased their first home in the area. He further added that he envisioned building his career with the team.
However, tensions escalated as McLaurin faced financial penalties for his holdout. Although he reported to camp, he refused to participate in practices until progress was made on a new deal. Ultimately, on July 31, McLaurin formally requested a trade from Washington.
Although there were strong rumors of a trade and multiple potential offers, things seemed to have come to a settlement between the team and the player. The chances of a wideout failing to consistently perform after the age of 30 was one of the key concerns for the Washington management.
McLaurin, who turns 30 next month, has recorded over 1,000 receiving yards in each of the past five seasons and posted a career-best 13 touchdowns in 2024. His performance was instrumental in leading the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game in January under quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Fans aren’t too fond of Terry McLaurin’s contract deal
Many Washington Commanders fans have voiced frustration over Terry McLaurin’s new deal, viewing it as an overpay, given his age and the team’s long-term financial outlook.

McLaurin was set to earn $15.5 million this season in the final year of his three-year, $68 million contract signed in 2022, per Spotrac. While his new agreement could replace the last year of that deal, the timing has raised concerns. If it doesn’t, McLaurin’s next contract would begin when he is 31.
The Commanders also have to account for quarterback Jayden Daniels’ looming extension, expected to be a massive deal, making McLaurin’s price tag even harder for some fans to justify. The Commanders’ fanbase has flooded social media to let know their thoughts.

However, it is not all negative. A sizable number of fans claimed that every dollar paid for the wideout was valid. One X user, TheTenebrousVex, even called McLaurin one of the top five in his positions.
Top 5 in the league. Well deserved.

Now, it’s up-to McLaurin to show that the deal was worth every amount they paid.
