The Connor McDavid contract extension saga is over. On Monday, the Edmonton Oilers announced that their captain had signed a 2-year $25 million extension with the team. He would drop a 4-word reaction to make his feelings known on social media.
The forward had signed an 8-year, $100 million ($12.5 million Average Annual Value) contract in 2017. He was in the final year of this deal and would have become an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) in July 2026 had he not signed any extension.
McDavid’s contract talks were one of the biggest talking points in the offseason this year. Following another heartbreaking loss in the Stanley Cup Final, the Canadian international expressed that he would take his time to decide his future and would not rush into signing a new deal.
There had been several reports indicating that he was willing to sign a short-term deal instead of a big one. On Monday, these reports came true.
The Oilers announced that McDavid had signed a 2-year, $25 million extension ($12.5 million AAV). Instead of a big deal, the 3-time NHL MVP decided to have the same salary and not take a raise which many thought he would.

McDavid was selected as the No.1 draft pick in 2015 by the Oilers. Since then, he has been a core member of the Canadian outfit and currently leads them as the captain.
In his 10 seasons with the team, the forward has accomplished several personal milestones and claimed many accolades. In 712 regular-season games for the Oilers, he has scored 361 goals and has 721 assists (1.082 points). In the 96 playoff games, he has 44 goals and 106 assists (150 points).
In the 2024-25 season, he was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner, an award given to the MVP of the Stanley Cup Final. The one thing he has not accomplished in his career, is the Stanley Cup.
After losing the 2024-25 Final against the Florida Panthers, the Oilers had a chance of redemption as the two locked horns again this year. Unfortunately for them, the Panthers once again came out on top and defeated them 4-2 in 6 games to go back-to-back as Stanley Cup champions.
Oilers GM calls Connor McDavid’s contract extension signing as exciting day for organization
The Edmonton Oilers fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Connor McDavid, on Monday, officially signed a 2-year contract extension with the team and will not be going away any time soon. After this deal was announced, team General Manager Stan Bowman called it an exciting day for the organization.

The Oilers have not tasted Stanley Cup success since 1990. Their next three trips in the Stanley Cup Final have all ended in defeats. These repeated setbacks had left many fans worried about McDavid leaving them and joining another cup-contending team.
The Oilers captain, however, had previously claimed that he wanted to win in Edmonton. Last month, GM Bowman expressed confidence in this words of the forward and claimed that they were not worried about his contract situation.
While addressing the media on Monday, the 52-year-old also pointed out that the $12.5 million AAV was something that McDavid wanted.
(The $12.5 million) was what Connor wanted; it’s not like we made a pitch that he should sign for that amount. We never had those conversations at all, and I think when we came down to it, we were excited to get ourselves down to where we are today. Obviously, it’s a very exciting day for our organization, our fans and our team.

A few hours later, the team also announced the contract extension of Jake Walman. They signed the defenseman to a 7-year $49 million ($7 million AAV).
The attention now turns towards the 2025-26 season, which gets underway on Tuesday. The Oilers will open their season against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday and then take on the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. After that, they will have their first road trip of the season, a 5-game stretch taking on the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, the New Jersey Devils, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Ottawa Senators.
