Connor McDavid suffered another huge loss on Sunday as Team Canada lost the Olympic gold medal match against Team USA. On Wednesday, the forward would drop a blunt response to a reporter’s question regarding this and and Stanley Cup defeats.
McDavid was leading Team Canada on Sunday as the captain in the absence of Sidney Crosby. This was the first meeting between the two teams since the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship game, where he scored the overtime winner to clinch the gold.
He and his team found themselves trailing early on as Matt Boldy struck in the first period for Team USA. McDavid’s side levelled up the things in the second period through Cale Makar, whose shot flew past Connor Hellebuyck and into the back of the goal.
The game would go into overtime after three periods of regulation failed to separate the teams. Alongside Makar and Nathan MacKinnon, McDavid was on ice when Jack Hughes scored the game-winning goal and sealed a 2-1 victory for Team USA.

This marked a third straight year in which McDavid had suffered a massive loss. While he did win the 4 Nations Face-Off with Canada in 2025, he would lose the Stanley Cup with the Edmonton Oilers for a second season running.
In 2024, the Canadian side found themselves 3-0 down in the best-of-seven series in the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers. While they came back to force a Game 7, they ended up losing 2-1 in that game and experienced a cup final defeat.
12 months later, the two sides met in the final again. The Oilers would win Games 1 and 4 thanks to overtime winners from Leon Draisaitl. However, the Panthers were once again too strong and beat them to the championship for a 2nd year running.
While speaking with the media on Wednesday, reporter Mark Spector of Sportsnet asked him a question regarding these losses.
This is a hard question, but. Stanley Cups found Gretzky and Crosby and those guys, and gold medals, and you’ve put yourself in position, and it’s not finding you. Did you think it would be this hard?
Mark Spector asked Connor McDavid
For a moment, the Oilers captain was seen visibly upset by this and dropped a blunt response.
That’s a nice question, thank you.

The 3-time NHL MVP would later answer the question. In his response, he would admit that it was “disappointing” to lose.
It’s disappointing. There’s no way around it. We could be sitting here having a totally different conversation if things had gone a little bit differently.
Connor McDavid added
"It starts with a big road trip here."

McDavid finished the tournament as the leading scorer with 13 points (2 goals and 11 assists) in 7 games. He was later named the MVP of the event despite losing the gold medal match.
Connor McDavid previously expressed that he wants to win the Stanley Cup with Oilers
Connor McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers teammates have finished as the runners-up in the past two seasons. With this being his 11th year with the team, the expectations have been growing with each passing season. The Canadian international has expressed that he wants to win the Stanley Cup with the Oilers.

Before going to the Olympics, McDavid opened up about his feelings in The Players’ Tribune. In this, he admitted wanting to feel the buzz of the cup in the city of Edmonton.
I’m 11 years into my career. Of course I think about my legacy. I want to be remembered as a winner. But not just anywhere. Here. To be in this city during a Cup run, to feel that buzz … it just wouldn’t be the same somewhere else.

The Oilers have not tasted Stanley Cup success since 1990. They did reach the Final in 2006 but ended up losing against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Speaking of the Oilers, they suffered a 6-5 defeat against the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday despite being 4-2 up at one stage. This was the team’s 4th successive loss. With a 28-23-8 record, they are 3rd in the Pacific Division Standings.
