There will be no third time’s the charm for the Edmonton Oilers and their captain, Connor McDavid, this season. On Thursday, the Canadian side suffered a 1st round exit from the Stanley Cup playoffs after a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks in Game 6.

The Oilers started this season hoping to finally get over the finish line in the playoffs. Last year, they suffered a Stanley Cup Final defeat at the hands of the Florida Panthers after losing Game 6.

A 4-goal performance from Sam Reinhart sealed a 5-1 win for the Panthers. They would thus repeat as champions, having beaten the Oilers in the 2024 Final as well.

With 2 successive final defeats against the same team, McDavid and his team were hoping the third time would be the charm for them. After finishing 2nd in the Pacific Division standings, the team was pitted against the Ducks, who finished 3rd behind them.

A good thing for the Oilers was that there were no Panthers this year. The 2-time defending champions failed to reach the playoffs as they finished with a 40-38-4 record for the season.

After winning Game 1 of the series, the Edmonton-based side dropped 3 games in a row and were on the brink of elimination in Game 5. A 4-1 victory in this game forced Game 6 and gave the team another fighting chance.

The Ducks eventually proved too strong for the Oilers. Goals from Ryan Poehling, Chris Kreider, Cutter Gauthier, and Troy Terry had them 4-1 up in the second period. Connor Murphy had scored for the Oilers in the first period and made it a 2-1 game.

While Vasily Podkolzin pulled another goal back for the Oilers, it was too much for them. A Leo Carlsson empty net goal sealed a 5-2 win for the Ducks and saw them win a playoff series for the first time since 2017.

For McDavid, it was yet another heartbreak in 2026. Just a couple of months ago, he was the captain of Team Canada when they lost the gold medal match in overtime against the United States of America.

Following another playoff failure, McDavid did not mince his words regarding his side. He called them an “average team” and claimed that they never found consistency.

We’ve been searching for consistency all year and obviously we didn’t find it here in the playoffs. It’s tough. We were an average team all year; an average team with high expectations, you’re going to be disappointed. We just never found it.

Connor McDavid said regarding Oilers’ defeat

McDavid finished the regular season with 138 points (48 goals and 90 assists) from 82 games. In the playoffs, he had 6 points (1 goal and 5 assists) from 6 games. Despite the individual brilliance of their captain, the Oilers were unable to avoid a first-round exit.

Kris Knoblauch claims the Oilers did not defend well in the series loss against the Ducks

Kris Knoblauch and the Edmonton Oilers are heading home. The 2024 and 2025 Western Conference champions were eliminated by the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday. Following the loss, the team’s head coach claimed that they did not defend well.

After a 4-3 win in Game 1, the Oilers lost 6-4 and 7-4 in Games 2 and 3, respectively. They then lost by a 4-3 win margin in overtime in Game 4.

Game 5 saw the Canadian team restrict their opponents to just 1 goal. With a 5-2 loss in Game 6, they ended up conceding 26 goals in this series. In reply, they scored 21 goals as both teams failed to produce a shutout in the series.

In the end, though, the Ducks were the ones who were smiling. Knoblauch, who suffered another disappointment with the team, expressed that his side was not good at defense.

Pretty much the story for most of the year was we didn’t defend well enough… Usually you win or lose on your defensive play & it wasn’t good enough.

Kris Knoblauch said in the post-game interview

This defeat has once again raised questions regarding the future of Knoblauch. For the team, their wait for the first Stanley Cup since 1990 goes on.
