On Thursday, the Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid sent the NHL fans into a shockwave. The captain of the Oilers made a social media post and tagged Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews in it, leaving the fans stunned.
The Oilers star is not someone who is super active on social media. So seeing him make a post on X and tagging a rival player in the middle of the season has left many scratching their heads in disbelief.
In his X post, McDavid seemingly challenged his compatriot in a crossbar challenge.
.@AM34 crossbar and in, let’s see it.

So what does the NHL superstar mean by this? Well nobody knows the answer to it. However, there is one possible reason behind this tweet from Connor McDavid.
A few hours before this post from him, the McDonald’s Canada account made a similar strange post on X. The company tweeted “something’s about to change the game forever” with the hockey stick emoji attached.
something’s about to change the game forever ?

Given that both McDavid and Matthews are captains of a Canadian team in the NHL, this could be an indication of a new advertisement for the fast-food restaurant chain. As of now, Matthews has not responded to the post of McDavid. Only time will tell what this message from McDavid eventually means.
Auston Matthews gearing up for another return from injury
The 2024-25 season has seen Auston Matthews struggle with injuries. The Toronto Maple Leafs captain missed a few games in November and came back to the team. He would get injured again and was once again sidelined. He is now gearing up for another return.

On Thursday, he was reported to have taken part in the practice again. He has missed the last six games of the team. The forward is feeling good and could be back in the team this weekend. He though is not sure whether he can put the upper-body issue behind him completely this season.
Yeah I don’t know. I hope so, that’s obviously the goal. It’s tricky with these things. It’s a physical sport, it’s a contact sport so things happen out there sometimes that are out of your control so just trying to manage it as best I can.

Matthews has been the top star of the team. Last season, he scored 69 league goals and picked up 38 assists. This season, he has only played in 24 games but still has 11 goals and 12 assists.
The Leafs went 7-2-0 in November in his absence. However, in the last six games, the team is 3-3-0, highlighting the huge absence of their captain from the ice field. It remains to be seen whether Matthews returns to the team on Saturday against the Boston Bruins.
