- Conor McGregor criticized the upcoming BMF title fight between Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira, questioning its credibility.
- He argued that the BMF title should be contested at 170 pounds, as originally established by Nate Diaz.
- McGregor has expressed interest in returning to competition and potentially headlining the UFC White House event.
The BMF title has become one of the most recognized non-traditional championships in UFC history. Created for high-profile matchups, it emphasizes fighter notoriety over rankings. The current champion, Max Holloway, will defend the belt against Charles Oliveira at UFC 326. However, UFC superstar Conor McGregor had some interesting thoughts regarding the credibility of the upcoming matchup.
The BMF title was introduced at UFC 244 on November 2, 2019, after Nate Diaz’s UFC 241 win. Diaz faced Jorge Masvidal at 170 pounds, the only time the belt was contested at welterweight, with ‘Gamebred’ winning via doctor’s stoppage. After Masvidal retired, Justin Gaethje defeated Dustin Poirier for the vacant BMF title at lightweight at UFC 291. Max Holloway later captured the belt at UFC 300, also at 155 lbs.
Holloway prepares for his second BMF title defense at UFC 326 against Oliveira, a rematch of their 2015 fight, which ended due to an injury to the Brazilian. The UFC asked top stars to make predictions for the main event on its official Instagram. Conor McGregor acknowledged both fighters’ skills but argued there was nothing “honorable” about the matchup being labeled BMF, leading into his critique of the bout.
Why go down to 155 and drain ourselves and then title it ‘BMF’. The BMF title was founded by Nate Diaz at 170 pounds. There is zero BMF about this.

While Diaz introduced the BMF title, he never won it, making his role in its creation unique. McGregor giving respect to Diaz and asking the UFC to acknowledge him is notable, considering their rivalry. The two clashed at UFC 196 and UFC 202, with the Irishman losing the first and winning the second. His comments about honoring Diaz stand out as a rare moment of recognition amid their tension.
This is not the first time McGregor has criticized BMF challengers. He publicly shamed inaugural champion Jorge Masvidal for calling out Gaethje for a lightweight BMF bout. McGregor argued that the move undermined the belt’s original welterweight spirit and mocked Masvidal for targeting a fighter lighter than himself. This reinforces his stance on keeping the championship true to its origins.
McGregor has previously shown interest in competing for the BMF title. However, the former two-division champion has been out of active competition since suffering a leg break at UFC 264 in 2021. He was slated to return against Michael Chandler at UFC 303, but the bout fell through due to the Irishman’s injury. With the UFC White House event approaching, Conor McGregor is still seeking a return to competition.
UFC champion believes that the UFC White House event is incomplete without Conor McGregor
The upcoming UFC White House event is being positioned as one of the biggest spectacles in the promotion’s history. Both Dana White and Donald Trump have been working together to make it a landmark event. The idea of hosting a UFC card at the White House has generated discussion in MMA. It has also caught Conor McGregor’s attention, who has expressed interest in fighting on the card.

McGregor has hinted at a six-month training camp ahead of a potential return. His longtime coach, John Kavanagh, supported the plan, noting the Irishman appears more focused than in recent years. However, UFC brass has shown limited optimism about McGregor’s comeback after repeated delays. UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has backed the Irishman ahead of his comments on the event.
You can’t have Conor McGregor not headline it – it wouldn’t make sense. I think a few of the standard things go out the window for this type of event.

While many fighters on the UFC roster remain divided over whether Conor McGregor could headline the event, Dana White has yet to reveal the official card. The promotion has only confirmed that the lineup is already built and will be announced soon. The event has also been referred to as Freedom 250, adding anticipation to the historic show. McGregor’s possible involvement remains one of the biggest talking points.
