Despite the MMA generation gap between Conor McGregor and Paddy Pimblett, both have a lot in common. The UFC fan base goes crazy whenever they fight, and they both held the Cage Warriors FC championship—two of the things that they have in common. However, Pimblett revealed his past encounter with McGregor from around 2013. What’s more fascinating is the year 2013, and what happened in UFC that year?

2013 saw the legendary championship reign of Anderson Silva come to an end. It was an upset that the fans did not think was possible. Chris Weidman rocked a ‘showboating’ Anderson Silva and put him out cold with brutal follow-up strikes on the ground. Paddy Pimblett recently recounted the incident and revealed what a devastated McGregor did in 2013.

It’s quite funny, I need to tell this. I was at my Cage Warriors debut the same night he [Chris Weidman] beat Anderson Silva the first time. I actually watched that fight with Conor McGregor in the Cage Warriors hotel. McGregor was devastated, and he ended up kicking a wall

Pimblett recounted the incident in front of Chris Weidman. The UFC hosts a live weigh-in show during the official weigh-in periods ahead of a PPV event. The show stars Daniel Cormier, Laura Sanko, and the aforementioned Weidman. It was then that ‘The Baddy’ told the story about a devastated McGregor.

Every fighter growing up in the 2000s admired Anderson Silva. Some regard him as the greatest fighter of all time due to his trick strikes and ultra-dominant championship reign. Consensus ‘MMA GOAT’ Jon Jones considered Silva as his greatest influence, and McGregor deeply respects the Brazilian superstar. As such, the devastation after that loss is a likely outcome and nothing controversial.

After the UFC 162 loss against Weidman, Silva received another opportunity to regain his title. However, at UFC 168, Silva suffered more devastation as he broke his leg during the fight. It was the downfall of Silva from that point. He never reached championship contention again. The beginning of the downfall of Silva was also the emergence of McGregor in the UFC.

Conor McGregor names Anderson Silva as the MMA GOAT

Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre, Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson, and Anderson Silva are the most prominent names on the MMA GOAT list. Some regard Khabib Nurmagomedov to be in the conversation, but most others rule him out for a short-lived dominance at the top. Meanwhile, Jones, GSP, Johnson, and Silva ruled their divisions for over five years, which includes at least 10 title fights.

Everyone has their GOAT at the top, and Conor McGregor has Silva at the top. The Irishman considered himself a close second but felt Silva had done enough to remain at the top. This was a list compiled by the Irishman in 2020.

The array of finishes, across 2 divisions, with champion status in 1, Anderson Silva is No.1 MMA GOAT. My array of finishes, across 3 divisions, with champion status in 2, I’m No.2. If not tied 1. However still active, No.1 is fully secured by career end. And easily.

In his prime, Silva used to take up non-title bouts in the light heavyweight division and destroy the competition for fun. There was a clear size disadvantage, but that never deterred Silva from fighting his heart out. On top of that, he is still the greatest middleweight champion of all time.

His reign includes an outstanding 10 consecutive title defenses, which is the best in middleweight history. The Brazilian legend also holds the record for the best winning streak in UFC history (16) and the longest reign as a UFC champion (2457 days). With accomplishments like this, it is easy to understand why McGregor chose Silva as the GOAT.
