In Short
  • Katerina Siniakova snubbed a handshake from Camila Osorio after losing their Miami Open match.
  • Siniakova's performance was hindered by a leg issue, leading to a quick defeat of 1-6, 4-6.
  • This incident follows Siniakova's history of controversial post-match interactions, including a cold handshake with former partner Barbora Krejcikova.

Tensions spiked through the roof on the opening day of the main draw of the Miami Open after Katerina Siniakova ignored Camila Osorio’s handshake after their opening round match in South Florida. The pair were friends in the first set as they were seen talking during break, but that changed at the end of the match.

Siniakova had entered the Miami Open after a hugely positive week at the Indian Wells Open. The Czech Republic star won the doubles tournament alongside Taylor Townsend and reached the round of 16 of the singles before retiring against Elina Svitolina. Before that, she claimed her biggest win of the season, beating 2025 Indian Wells champion Mirra Andreeva in three sets.

With tennis season moving to Miami, there were expectations that Siniakova would continue with her run in the singles and doubles. The tournament was her last chance to capitalize on the American hard courts until August, with a couple of months on clay in store ahead of the second Grand Slam of the season at Roland Garros.

Nonetheless, in the match between Siniakova and Osorio, it took the latter just 28 minutes to win the first set. Siniakova looked far from her best and had to call the physio for a leg problem. In the second set, she made sure to stamp her authority on the court and broke Osorio early to extend her lead 4-2.

But after that, she failed to manage her lead, as she failed to punish Osorio, who broke her immediately to cut the lead 4-3. That gave the Colombian star the momentum as she lost just two points after that and all three games in ruthless fashion to send Siniakova tumbling on the court and out of the competition.

Siniakova rose from the court and was in no good mood after losing 1-6, 4-6 in less than an hour and 30 minutes to Osorio, who approached to embrace the defeated opponent. But the doubles World No.2 offered her a firm handshake at the end of the court before walking past her. Siniakova then shook the umpire’s, which Osorio also did, but at a much slower pace.

Osorio then tried to muster something to Siniakova as she tried to talk to the Czech Republic star about something, but she was having none of it. Siniakova completely ignored the World No 58 taking her bag and storming out of the court with tears rolling down her cheeks in disappointment, while the fans booed her for her reaction to the loss.

Katerina Siniakova once gave her former doubles partner a cold handshake

This is not the first time that Katerina Siniakova has displayed a controversial action on the court. Back in 2024, she made headlines during the Australian Open when she decided to give Barbora Krejcikova a cold handshake after their doubles match. That match came just weeks after their split at the end of the 2023 season.

Before that, the pair had dominated doubles tennis for years. They won seven Grand Slam titles as partners, with no other partnership coming close to that during that period. They also secured an Olympic gold medal for the Czech Republic, which was one of their biggest achievements on the court.

But in Melbourne, Siniakova partnered with Storm Hunter, while Krejcikova took Laura Siegemund. Neither player has partnered after their fallout in 2023. For the past few months, Siniakova has been playing alongside American star Taylor Townsend in the doubles category. Both players won the 2026 Indian Wells Open doubles.

Townsend praised Siniakova for not giving up despite sustaining an injury during her fourth-round singles match against Elina Svitolina at the WTA 1000 tournament. However, after winning the Indian Wells, Siniakova just had two days of rest before facing Camila Osorio, which might have led to her loss as she struggled with a leg problem in the first set.
