Nico Harrison hoped that trading Luka Doncic away for Anthony Davis would bring the Dallas Mavericks championships. Then his hopes were heightened when they landed Cooper Flagg in the draft.

When the trade happened, fans and analysts had to double-check whether the news was true. They were given the benefit of the doubt, as in the age of AI and fake news, no one in their right mind would believe that the franchise would give up on Doncic.

That is why Mavericks fans pulled out all the stops when leveling their frustrations at him. From death threats to protests to ‘Fire Nico’ chants, they did whatever they could think of.

The last of those has continued to this day and was evident during their loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. One fan tweeted that those chants were a distraction for Cooper Flagg and his teammates.

Amid rumors of Harrison’s potential dismissal, the rookie’s mother, Kelly Flagg, reposted that tweet. That repost gained traction, forcing the former basketball player to clarify her stance.

Retweet wasn’t about firing Nico. It was about the fact that the fans were chanting during our free throws. Our guys had nothing to do with what went down. It’s done now, so we all need to move on. Hopefully, better days ahead.

The ‘done now’ part was her referring to after the Mavericks fired Nico Harrison earlier. She reiterated that those ‘Fire Nico’ chants were distracting her son and his teammates, even though they had nothing to do with it.

Mavs owner admitted trading away Luka Doncic was a mistake before firing Nico Harrison

Before firing Nico Harrison, there was an incident during their game against the Milwaukee Bucks when a fan wearing a Luka Doncic Lakers No. 77 jersey was seen sitting next to Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont.

It later emerged that the fan had flipped Dumont off during their season opener, and his father asked him to apologize. ESPN’s Shams Charania later received this update to that conversation.

The Mavericks are firing Harrison nine months after the jarring and stunning Luka Doncic trade – a move for which Dumont took accountability and accepted as a mistake in a court-side interaction with a fan on Monday night.

This revelation means the ownership has accepted that trading Doncic away to the Lakers was a mistake. That went a long way in the dismissal of their former GM, who they believe had sent the organization down a rabbit hole.

Mavs reporter details how negativity surrounding Nico Harrison impacted team

Before the 2025-26 campaign start, many believed Nico Harrison had done a good job of assembling a team worthy of becoming champions.

After 11 games, that belief has gone out of the window, with the same analysts and fans questioning whether the Mavericks will make the playoffs.

When detailing what was troubling the team, franchise great Dirk Nowitzki detailed how the players were unable to do anything right. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon added a psychological twist to it while speaking on NBA Today.

Nico Harrison was the focal point for Mavericks fans, that was not healthy, that was not productive. The Mavs players felt that they were at a home-court disadvantage. ‘These people don’t want us to win,’ one player said.

This means the players were not enjoying what they were doing amidst all the negativity. That may have been the reason Patrick Dumont decided to end the nightmare.
