Corentin Moutet warned Alexander Bublik that he would send him home before they met in the second round of the ongoing Paris Masters. But Mouet failed to accomplish his mission and instead dealt with jibes from the Kazakh ace.

Before their Paris clash, they clashed in the quarterfinal of the Phoenix Challengers this year and engaged in an altercation, with Bublik asking the Frenchman to fight him off the court. No such scenes the crowd witnessed in Paris as Bublik, right after winning the last point of the match, extended his hand for the customary handshake.

But on the camera, Bublik signed it with these words: “on your way home,” a way to taunt Moutet. During the on-court interview, Bublik made his feelings known on why he wrote the message. He said he had to punish Moutet for his “home” comment, and sarcastically said Moutet can now book a cab to head toward home.

At the press conference after his defeat, the 26-year-old responded to Bublik’s jibe. “Well, I now live in Dubai.” He was then asked whether he felt any tension with Bublik at the beginning of the match.

No. Today I tried to focus on myself. I don’t think it was personal. He likes to make fun of players. I don’t know what you expect from me. Some people talk; some people don’t. I guess he’s part of the first category. He loves to verbally clash with people. I don’t like that kind of thing.

The win helped Bublik take a 2-0 head-to-head lead. This marked the end of another opportunity for Moutet to win his career’s first singles title.

When things go beyond words, I know how people behave, and I know what kind of character he is, apart from the character that is shown in the media. So it’s no use talking behind the mic. He’s good enough to do that by himself. I’ll let him do it.

Bublik is chasing his fifth title of the season as well as his career’s first Big Title. The 28-year-old has never progressed beyond the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 tournament. In Paris, he has never reached the quarterfinals.

Bublik will now be up against a player who defeated him in their previous three meetings. It’s fourth seed Taylor Fritz, who eliminated Aleksandar Vukic in the previous round.

Sascha holds a 3-3 head-to-head record against the American. Fritz is bidding to win his second title in a Masters 1000 tournament. He clinched his career’s first Big Title by defeating Rafael Nadal at the 2022 Indian Wells.

This season, the 2024 US Open finalist won the Stuttgart Open and the Eastbourne International, and also reached the final of the Japan Open but failed to beat Carlos Alcaraz. Fritz is a former quarterfinalist in Paris, and last year, his run ended in the second round.

This season, while Bublik reached the round of 16 of a tournament just once in the Masters 1000s, Fritz played two semifinals (at the Miami Open and the Canadian Open). If Bublik beats Fritz, he will reach a career-high No.13 in the rankings table, and winning the tournament will make him a Top 10 player. The four titles that Bublik has lifted this year are: Halle Open, Swiss Open Gstaad, Austrian Open Kitzbuhel, and Hangzhou Open.
