Daniil Medvedev’s run at the Washington Open came to an end after losing in three sets to French lucky loser Corentin Moutet. Medvedev was the favorite to win the tie having picked up form in his last two matches. However, the highlight of the match was the final service game which went in favor of Moutet.
Medvedev began the match with a dominant display, striking 10 winners in the opening set. The 29-year-old won the first set 6-1 before the humid temperature in Washington began to affect his game in the second set. That led Moutet to use his court craft and unconventional service to take advantage of Medvedev’s errors.
Medvedev earned 51 percent of his first serve and sprayed ten double faults. The hot conditions got worse when the Russian star was down 2-4 (15-15) and he sought a medical timeout, checking his temperature. Moutet received a medical timeout as well, as he struggled with a knee problem.
However, Moutet did well to win the set 6-4 forcing the tie to a deciding set. It was Medvedev who first struck in the third set, but he coughed up three double faults, which allowed the Frenchman to seize the opportunity and take the lead. After two hours and 15 minutes, the match was suspended for 40 minutes due to lightning in the local area.
Nonetheless, Moutet was leading 1-6, 6-4, 5-4 with Medvedev to serve. The Russian star hit the final service game, which Moutet returned and he replied with a drop shot that led to a rally close to the net. It ended with Moutet winning the point, which led to him beating the World No.14 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and twenty-five minutes.

Moutet is now in his first ATP 500 semi-finals and will take on Alex de Minaur, who defeated Brandon Nakashima in the quarter-finals. The 26-year-old was ranked World No.59 before the Washington Open, but will now jump 13 spots in the ATP rankings following his run at the tournament.
Meanwhile, Medvedev arrived at the Citi Open in his lowest ranking, World No.14, since 2019, but he’s expected to remain at the position after the tournament. He will now hope to play better at the Canadian Open, which commences on July 26 ahead of the Cincinnati Open and US Open in the United States.
Daniil Medvedev furiously hurls rackets and a water bottle after loss to Corentin Moutet
Daniil Medvedev was furious after he lost the quarter-finals match to Corentin Moutet at the Washington Open. The Russian star went to shake hands with the Frenchman in the net without his racket as he hurled it to the air, barely missing the umpire’s chair and the members of the crowd in the front row.

The crowd immediately booed at his action. However, it didn’t stop there, Medvedev started hurling his water bottle in his bag onto the court, trying to break it in frustration, as Moutet, on the other hand, was soaking in the emotions of his clinical victory. The World No.14 left the court in anger with the boos still ringing loud from the crowd.

Medvedev has endured a poor season by his standards. The former US Open champion is yet to win a title since May 2023 at the Italian Open. He has been a subject of criticism for his performance in recent months, especially after being knocked out in the first rounds of the French Open and Wimbledon.
He has only won one Grand Slam match this season, which is pretty poor for a player, who reached the final of the Australian Open and semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championship last year. He will hope to get over his rough patch ahead of the US Open, which begins in August.
