In Short
  • Corentin Moutet lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Hamburg Open, with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
  • In a fit of anger after losing a point, Moutet pulled down his shorts, shocking the crowd and receiving a warning.
  • Moutet has not won a tour-level title and has lost three consecutive opening-round matches.

Corentin Moutet has already developed a reputation for losing his cool when things don’t go his way while competing. His fiery temper was once again on display, and this time, he lashed out at his pants.

The Frenchman competed at the Hamburg Open, and in the first round, he suffered a 6-4, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Moutet, at one moment, flung his racket at the advertising banner after losing a point.

And when Fokina ended a rally in his favor, Moutet pulled off a bizarre act. In a fit of anger, he pulled down his shorts and revealed his underwear to the utter shock of the crowd. For this unsportsmanlike conduct, he unsurprisingly received a warning from the chair umpire.

The win helped Fokina improve his head-to-head record over Moutet to 2-0. Prior to this match, they met in the second round of the 2025 Canadian Open, which the Spaniard won in straight sets.

Fokina will next be locking horns with third seed Alex de Minaur, who came from a set down to knock out Francisco Cerundolo in the previous round. The World No.9 holds a 3-2 head-to-head record over Fokina, last meeting him in the final of last year’s Citi Open, which de Minaur won in three sets.

During the Miami Open in March this year, Moutet made headlines all thanks to his altercation with Danielle Collins. The American ace had claimed that Moutet tried to flirt with her, but was told he needed to have bigger serves. Collins then claimed Moutet later slid into her DM but unfollowed her because she was not interested in “short kings”.

Moutet reacted to the claims and wrote on X that he never followed her. The Frenchman also urged her to love herself to avoid doing “stupid” things to get people’s attention.

Corentin Moutet has yet to win a tour-level title

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has so far featured in five finals, losing all. Last year, he progressed to four finals: he lost the Belray Beach Open to Miomir Kecmanovic, the Mexican Open to Tomas Machac, Citi Open to Alex de Minaur, and the Swiss Indoors to Joao Fonseca.

Corentin Moutet has also not yet tasted success on the tour. And so far, he has featured in three finals, including last year’s Almaty Open, losing the match to 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev.

Moutet has now lost three back-to-back opening-round matches. Prior to arriving in Hamburg, Pablo Llamas Ruiz clinched a three-set win in the Italian Open second round. Fokina’s run in Rome ended in the third round with a straight-set defeat to Andrey Rublev.

After Hamburg, the tennis world will shift its focus toward the French Open, which kicks off on Sunday (May 24). Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz won’t be playing as a wrist injury dashed his hat-trick goal.

His arch-rival Jannik Sinner, who finished as the runner-up last year, will enter the tournament as the heavy favorite, given that he has yet to lose a match since the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open. The four-time Grand Slam champion took home the first five Masters 1000s of the season, becoming the first man to do so.

Moutet, on the other hand, has never made it past the fourth round in Paris, reaching that stage just once, in 2024. Last year, his run ended in the second round. The 27-year-old, in fact, has yet to reach a quarterfinal in a Major.

Fokina has so far reached just one quarterfinal in a Grand Slam tournament. The 26-year-old reached the last eight at the 2021 French Open. Last year, he suffered a second-round exit.
