This past offseason, Kris Boyd signed with the New York Jets with the belief that he could help the rebuilding team as a veteran presence in their locker room.

After leaving the Houston Texans, he signed a one-year, $1.6 million deal with the Big Apple-based team. However, during the preseason, he injured his shoulder, and the Jets placed him on injured reserve, where he has stayed so far.

Now, it seems the 29-year-old will make injured reserve his permanent designation after he was hospitalized after an incident at 2 a.m. in Midtown Manhattan.

It so happens that Boyd and some of his friends visited Sei Less, an Asian-fusion eatery, in that area. The restaurant happens to be a popular spot with celebrities. The cornerback and his friends got into a dispute with other unidentified persons, and it soon turned violent, with the Jets star being shot in his abdomen.

Law enforcement is still trying to investigate the incident. They did find out that a BMW X6 SUV and a Mercedes-Benz Maybach, both high-end vehicles, fled the scene after the shooting.

Kris Boyd was shifted to Bellevue Hospital, where the Texas native was clinging on to life. The New York Post later discovered that the defensive back was listed as being critical but in stable condition.

Kris Boyd was with 2 other Jets players when he was shot

As NYPD investigators started to piece together evidence, they found surveillance footage that showed the BMW X6 first crashing into a barrier, and another person inside fired off into the crowd.

As the SUV started to peel off the road, the Maybach followed suit. The problem law enforcement is facing is two-fold. On one hand, the streets outside the restaurant were packed at that time of night.

Therefore, it is unclear if Kris Boyd was the intended target. On top of that, Sei Less’ management is not willing to allow investigators to comb through their surveillance footage.

To make matters worse, witnesses are not cooperating. Therefore, it is unclear who fired those shots or why Boyd was injured in the shooting. However, they did come to understand that the cornerback was with 2 of his teammates and a close friend.

The New York Post has not been able to identify who those players were, as the New York Jets have not returned the publication’s information requests. However, police did inform The Post that Boyd started to get a sense of some bad ‘vibes’ from inside the restaurant after witnessing two other groups arguing.

Jets teammate asks fans to pray for Kris Boyd

The Jets last played on Thursday against the New England Patriots. Usually after a loss, players do not go about celebrating. However, Kris Boyd seemed to be in a different mood on Sunday night.

Everybody please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!!! Lord please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety. Lord I ask that you please just get him through this safely. In your name, Amen.

This was linebacker Jermaine Johnson II, who could not believe the news that his teammate was shot. It could be that the pass rusher was not on sight, but at least he was asking the public to pray for his teammate.

The last time a player was shot, it took nearly 2 months to recover and get back on the field. In Kris Boyd’s situation, that recovery timeline could effectively end his season.
