Could LeBron James Be On The Move? Latest Rich Paul Statement Puts Rob Pelinka Under Pressure
LeBron James opted into his $53 million player option for 2025-26, but is demanding roster changes ahead of the season.

Another season ended with another early playoff defeat for LeBron James this past year. The Lakers star is now 40 years old, but was able to lead his team to their highest seed since the bubble 2019-20 year. As a team, many believed that they would be able to win at least two round of the playoffs and go toe-to-toe with OKC this year. However, their first round exit put paid to those hopes from the Lakers faithful.
The Lakers entered that series as favorites, according to Magic Johnson and many other experts. After all, a wing duo of Luka Doncic and LeBron James should ideally be too good for any other team. But both of these players underperformed, especially in the fourth quarters of games. James went scoreless for over 25 minutes of fourth quarter action in the series. Doncic was left with too much of a load to pick up the slack.
Doncic himself had a stomach bug in Game 3 that prevented him from playing up to his full potential. Meanwhile, Austin Reaves had a subpar series and was nowhere close to as effective as during the regular season. All of these factors, combined with their lack of size, meant an ignominious playoff exit. As Shannon Sharpe would put it, ‘Lakers in 5’ did happen, but to them instead of the sixth seeded Wolves.
It is clear that the Lakers need to rebuild around Luka Doncic in the foreseeable future. However, with James on the team, it is still a championship-or-bust year for the Lakers. But James may not stick around if GM Rob Pelinka doesn’t help him with a better supporting cast. At least, that’s the statement that James’ agent and Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul put out through ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania today:
LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career. We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career.

What moves can Rob Pelinka make to pacify LeBron James and Rich Paul?
Realistically, the Lakers don’t have many assets to trade and build a foundation around James. His defensive pressure and intensity have been called into question throughout his Lakers tenure and these aren’t going to get any better as James enters his age-41 season.

The Lakers could explore trades away for King James – a daunting prospect even on paper. They would be hard-pressed to get equal value for him; James had an All-NBA Second Team selection last year. One of the few partners with the assets to get him would be the San Antonio Spurs.
The Spurs look set to try and capitalize on Victor Wembanyama’s rookie contract period and build a team ready to compete now. They were in the mix for Kevin Durant and were also rumored to be pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo. If James wishes to be on an athletic, young team who can also defend, forcing a trade to Texas to play with the 7’5″ big man would undoubtedly be a tempting option.
