The Dallas Cowboys’ rivalry against the Philadelphia Eagles is one of the most intense in the NFL. Despite their longstanding rivalry, none of their matchups have resulted in Jerry Jones tearing up. The most popular owner and operator in football does not shed tears often but when he does, that memory remains imprinted forever.

Jerry Jones broke down in 1994 after the San Francisco 49ers beat the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship round. During his most recent appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jones looked back on the loss which went on to earn San Francisco its fifth Super Bowl trophy.

The 49ers beat Dallas 38-28 as the latter was one win away from reaching the Super Bowl after a 13-4 record until that point.

One of the few times I’ve ever cried, literally cried, was the (1994 NFC Championship game) we had at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. We lost that game, and I thought we had a great team. We lost it when Barry Switzer was our head coach and Deion Sanders was a 49er. We came back there, and I thought we had a chance to win it after a disastrous start.

Jerry Jones recalled

The Cowboys were trailing by 21-0 early on in the game but Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith helped them narrow the lead down.

The Dallas Cowboys have not been in the NFC Championship game since 1995

However, despite their best efforts, the 49ers held on and continued to put points on the board. Ultimately, Dallas fell short and San Francisco went on to beat the San Diego Chargers 49-26 in the Super Bowl. Since that point moving forward, every time the Cowboys go up against the 49ers, he cannot help but recall the pain that the 94′ loss inflicted on the team’s fanbase and looks forward to his team beating them.

Unfortunately for him, the Cowboys have faltered at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers last season and this season. Last year, Dallas lost 42-10 and this season, they fell short 30-24. Despite the rivalry between the two teams, Jerry Jones continues to have a great deal of respect for the organization.

We’ve had some great days in San Francisco; go back pretty far to those great days. (San Francisco 49ers) are a great franchise; they’re formidable. We got a great history with them.

Jerry Jones added

Another thing that both teams have in common is that they have not won a Super Bowl in this century. The Cowboys won their last Super Bowl in 1995 and the 49ers in 1994. Since then, the latter has made it to more Super Bowls than the former but they have been unable to close the deal to win their sixth Lombardi Trophy. It has been a rough couple of decades for these two teams who have not been short on talent but have continued to struggle to win.
