It appears the NFL wouldn’t have a 17-game schedule in practice as much as it did with the 16 or 14-game schedule. The Dallas Cowboys Chief Operating Officer Stephen Jones has firm faith in that as he believes the 18-game NFL regular season schedule will be implemented soon and the players will embrace it with full spirit.
The addition of another game into the regular season schedule has been in talk all around the league. Many believe the players wouldn’t like a longer season, but Jones claims the contrary while adding that the 18-game schedule is “probably inevitable.”
I’m on the competition committee. We’ve talked about this knowing that it’s probably inevitable. I do know, at the end of the day, the players enjoy the compensation that’s coming their way, and they get, for the most part, half of every revenue dollar that comes through the door. So certainly getting paid well.Stephen Jones said in his appearance on The Athletic’s Scoop City podcast
Jones emphasized that by having a longer season, revenue all around the league would grow and also help compensate the players using the money available. He shared that the Competition Committee is figuring out the adjustments the 32 teams of the NFL will have to make for the extended regular season.
Stephen Jones praises Mike McCarthy’s ability to keep team healthy
While talking about how the teams want their best players pumped off and healthy to give their best performances in the playoffs, the Cowboys’ COO also complimented the Cowboys’ head coach Mike McCarthy.
I think coach [Mike] McCarthy, our head coach, is one of the best at managing our team and keeping them healthy. Keeping them upright and keep them feeling good as the season progresses. It'll be something we'll have to continue to manage. I know Mike, we want to be at our best when the playoffs roll around.Stephen Jones added
He further added that the NFL committee is also discussing bringing in an active roster increase on gameday along with an extra bye week to ensure that the players are not burdened with additional games and remain healthy.
