Dak Prescott is in a predicament about his future with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys are waiting to work out a deal that helps out all parties. But at the same time, they do not want to be too late in doing so. He can become a free agent after next season and command a premium.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler was speaking on the show NFL Live and gave his take on the situation.
They are all in on re-signing Dak Prescott, eventually. Behind the scenes they've made it clear they don't want him to hit free agency in 2025. They want him to be the quarterback of the future. But their negotiations so far has been described to me as passive. Sometime this summer they are gonna have to ramp up the heat a little bit, come with a strong offer and get the ball going. They're just slow playing it a little bit.Jeremy Fowler said
Essentially, they want to keep Dak Prescott on as their starting quarterback in the long run in their quest for a Super Bowl. But they will take it slow for handing out a long-term contract.
That is easier said than done, as Dak Prescott is being paid the second most in the NFL this season. Owner Jerry Jones wanted to see how the season goes before offering Prescott a new extension. But if Prescott elevates his play and becomes an All-Pro, it will be difficult to get the right price down.
After all, the three-time Pro Bowler is a free agent after this season. Making him possibly one of the most coveted free agents next season. That and a good season could make him pricey for the Dallas Cowboys.
Dak Prescott’s situation might snowball into a difficult future for the Dallas Cowboys
If Dak Prescott does end up having an All-Pro level season and at the same time decides to test free agency, the situation will become difficult for the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones has already suggested that paying Prescott the premium will mean less money to bring in better players in other positions.
However, if Prescott does test free agency, he could command much more. That is considering next season’s draft class does not have the same number of good-to great-quarterbacks as it did this year. If the Dallas Cowboys are forced to overpay their starting quarterback, it will seriously hinder them in the quest to go after quality players in free agency or even extend one of their own.
Restricting them from making a run at the Super Bowl, at least for the duration of his new contract. They should tie Dak Prescott down to an extension soon before his demands blow their tactics out of the water.
