The rumors appear to be true: Dallas Cowboys are seeking to draft a quarterback as a successor of quarterback Dak Prescott. Though some have criticized this decision, former Green Bay Packers star James Jones seems to be amused by it.
While discussing whether the Cowboys should draft Prescott’s replacement on Fox Sports’ The Facility, Jones applauded the team’s decision, calling it the “smartest thing” they have ever done. Known for his candid opinions, Jones has never been a fan of the Cowboys starting quarterback and after his season-ending injury from last season, he praised America’s Team decision to acquire young talent.
When you have an injury-prone quarterback in front of you, you want to protect the franchise and have a guy that can come in and play good football. And surprise surprise, he can come in and play better than your starter and you end up in the Super Bowl twice with Super Bowl win and Super Bowl MVP.”

He further clarified that he is not claiming that Prescott would get hurt again and the season would experience another crashing demise like the 2024 campaign, but they need to have a reliable backup, “somebody better than Cooper Rush,” who can sweep in and potentially become the franchise’s quarterback.
Cowboys legend Michael Irvin wants Jalen Hurts-type quarterback to replace Dak Prescott
The Packers former star isn’t the only one to support this decision by the Cowboys, franchise legend Michael Irvin also appreciated it during FS1’s Speak. He expressed his wish for the team to draft a versatile quarterback as well as the Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, who is coming off a grand Super Bowl triumph.

This time around I’m okay with this process, but I want them to go in the direction, I want you to get me a real runner. We already established that Jalen Hurts has shown you a new way to win a Super Bowl. Now, I want you to go, ‘That’s a quarterback that can run’. I want you to find me a fourth-round quarterback that’s a running quarterback, not a quarterback that can run.
Michael Irvin said
The last time Dallas drafted a quarterback was 2016 in the fourth-round pick.
Unfortunately, this season, they don’t even have a fourth-round pick. But what they do have is a fifth-round pick, which makes it more interesting to see the franchise’s next moves.
