It was a good day for the Washington Commanders after they traded for another star wide receiver in Deebo Samuel. This gives Jayden Daniels another weapon on which Terry McLaurin can rely. The trade was shocking since Washington gave just a fourth-round pick to San Francisco in exchange for Samuel.
The asking price was unlikely to be a lot. This is because Deebo Samuel had asked to be traded at the earliest after a difficult season with the 49ers. The Commanders’ quick action has, however, irked fans of the Dallas Cowboys who believe Samuel could have been a good pickup for them if Jerry Jones had attempted to initiate a solid trade for him.
There is no clarity if the Cowboys made any attempts to enquire of Samuel’s availability, but considering the 49ers gave the receiver up for a fifth-round pick, it seems unlikely that they did.
Dallas gave up a fourth-round pick to bring Carolina Panthers wideout Jonathan Mingo on board. His trade value was more than Deebo Samuel and based on their production, it is too good to be true. While fans began to call Jerry Jones out yet again, edge rusher Micah Parsons came to his aid by mentioning the 22 million price tag that came with Samuel.
Dallas’ decision to bring Mingo was based on the hope that the team would have another wideout to fall back on other than CeeDee Lamb. However, in 8 games, Mingo was targeted 16 times and caught 5 passes for 46 yards. Not the numbers Jerry Jones had in mind.
The Commanders will pay Deebo Samuel for the final year of his contract
The wideout enters the final year of his three-year deal with San Francisco. The total value was $71,55,000 out of which he will be owed just $17 million for the upcoming season. San Francisco now has $31 million in dead-cap money and Micah Parsons is convinced that Dallas did the right thing by staying away from Samuel.

Washington picked up almost 22 million on Deebo, contract this year! This legit doesn’t correlate at all!

He is right in that aspect. Samuel comes with a hefty price tag, one that Dallas cannot afford this year. The team has under $4 million free on its cap space, which is one of the worst situations in the NFL. They still have to offer sizeable extensions to Micah Parsons and Demarcus Lawrence, which means their hands are effectively tied when it comes to trading for players under hefty contracts.

Deebo Samuel in Dallas could have worked out well. Dallas needs another star receiver apart from CeeDee Lamb as the team’s reliance on the rushing game has come down.
Similar to years before, Jerry Jones will look to complete the team’s position requirements through the NFL Draft. It will be interesting to see if the Cowboys opt to pick a running back with their first-round pick or head in a different direction.
