The Dallas Cowboys will watch the playoffs from the comforts of their home once again, as their fate was sealed in Landover when the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders on Saturday night. Only an Eagles defeat would have kept them in the hunt for a wildcard spot.
The Cowboys only have themselves to blame for being in this position. After beating both the Eagles and the Chiefs in consecutive weeks, they went on to lose to the 3-11 Arizona Cardinals and the 6-8 Minnesota Vikings, creating a nearly impossible playoff scenario.
ESPN analytics gave the Cowboys a 1% chance of securing a wild-card spot. To achieve that, they had to win their remaining games against the Chargers, Commanders, and Giants, while the Eagles needed to lose all of theirs.
The Eagles’ 29-18 victory against the Commanders in week 16 knocked the Cowboys out of playoff qualification.

Social media pokes fun at the Dallas Cowboys for missing the playoffs
The Cowboys are America’s Team – although some would question that claim, considering they haven’t played an NFC title game or the Super Bowl for thirty years. A Cowboys fan born in the late 1990s or the 2000s has been deprived of the glory days that ended with the Jimmy Johnson era.

The Cowboys hypothetically went all-in despite trading away their best defensive asset, Micah Parsons, before the season began. This one move derailed the Cowboys’ years. Sure, acquiring Pro Bowl DT Kenny Clark and signing one Quinnen Williams from the Jets looked great on paper, but the Cowboys’ defense rarely met the same standards when Parsons was part of the roster.
Quarterback Dak Prescott carried the offense on his shoulders. He ranks second in the league with 3931 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Prescott’s subordinates, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, have put up 2100+ combined yards and 11 touchdowns. Running back Javonte Williams has crossed 1100 yards and 10 touchdowns. However, none of that matters anymore because the playoffs are no longer an option.

Cowboys are officially eliminated from playoffs and will not make it as far as the conference title game for 30th straight season. Only teams with longer active droughts:

Dolphins 33 straight
Browns 33 straight (excludes 1996-98 when they didn't have a team)

The cowboys wasted a healthy MVP type season from Dak and waited until the trade deadline to do something to a middle school defense.

Should the Cowboys be the favorites in the NFC East in 2026? 😆

Meanwhile, the Eagles rally on in their pursuit to retain their Super Bowl crown. The win over the Commanders secured back-to-back NFC East titles for the first time since Donovan McNabb led the Eagles to four straight divisional titles at the turn of the century.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has once again been the catalyst behind the Eagles’ success. Hurts did not let minor hiccups waver from his goal. After 15 games, Hurts has accumulated 3114 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions, along with 8 touchdowns on the ground. AJ Brown, who caught 9 passes for 95 yards against the Commanders, needs one good game to cross 1000 yards for the fourth straight year. DeVonta Smith went 6 for 42 on Saturday and has 931 yards and 4 touchdowns in 2025.
