The tension inside the Cowboys locker room has been up regarding McCarthy's extension.

Mike McCarthy is on borrowed time. With just one year remaining in his Dallas Cowboys contract, McCarthy appears to be heading for the exit as owner Jerry Jones shows no sign of a further extension.

McCarthy’s lack of power has made him frustrated with the Cowboys’ front office. Jones’ constant despondence toward the head coaching job has alarm bells ringing through our Arlington.

Ever since the Cowboys crashed out in the wild card against the Green Bay Packers last season, McCarthy’s job is insecure. Anyone would be able to confirm that it’s Super Bowl or burst at this point for the 60-year-old.

Jones has the leverage in his hands, as big-name coaches like Bill Belichick remain without a gig for the new season. For Jones’ it’s a no-brainer to let McCarthy see out his contract and from the next campaign, they will appoint a fresh face with perhaps a new quarterback.

Personnel inside the Cowboys’ locker were hoping to see McCarthy continue beyond the 2024 season, at least for one more year. It will help calm the nerves down because building a winning team isn’t a 12-month workload.

Tyler Dunne with Go Long talked to several sources inside the Cowboys.

At least give him a one-year extension. [Don’t] give him another five years, but at least extend them out one year and extend out all the coaches one year to give them a level of security.

Mike McCarthy is left to under-achieve for the Cowboys

Jerry Jones promised that the Cowboys would go all in during the free agency, but it came and went, leaving more questions than answers. This is basically setting McCarthy up for failure, which would give the veteran owner the excuse to remove him from his post.

This has had a negative effect on the players. Even they know that the owner has more power and control over the organization. Even if they have one of the best rosters in the league, it will not gel unless there’s a solid leader.

They’re going to underachieve when the coaches can’t influence the players the way they need to.
the former Cowboys personnel told Dunne

McCarthy reportedly is fed up with the treatment from Jones. The players believe they have good enough players and a quarterback who can lead the team to the Super Bowl, but with the coach in the bind, their hard work will be for nothing.

Mike [McCarthy] is doing it the best he can. Some of the people I’ve talked to have said that he’s getting fed up with it a little bit.
the former Cowboys personnel added

After his first season hiccup, Mike McCarthy turned things around by achieving three consecutive seasons of 12-5 record. However, his tenure with the Cowboys will always be measured by his failure to win postseason games (1-3).
