When the Chicago Bears fired Matt Eberflus in the middle of the season, fans speculated he might spend the 2025 season out of the league. However, the Dallas Cowboys came as his knight and shining armor, hiring him as their new defensive coordinator and fans are ecstatic about the move.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday that Jerry Jones has officially closed the deal to hire Eberflus as the new defensive coordinator. Prior to his failed stint with the Chicago Bears, Eberflus built a name for himself by coaching the defensive side of the ball. However, his tenure with the Bears ended on a horrible note on Thanksgiving, when the franchise was left with no other option but to fire him.
Eberflus, who previously served as the Cowboys’ linebacker coach from 2011 to 2017, is stepping into a role that comes with high expectations. And after his tumultuous tenure in the Windy City, he is seeking redemption in Dallas. The good thing is his track record as a defensive coordinator in the Indianapolis Colts included multiple top-10 finishes in scoring defense, which means the Cowboys may have done proper research to hire Eberflus.

However, skepticism looms large among the fanbase, as they are concerned about his recent struggles and whether he can effectively lead a defense that finished near the bottom of the league in points and yards allowed this season.
Things took a poor turn for the Cowboys, when owner Jerry Jones promoted Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach, replacing Mike McCarthy. As Defensive Coordinator Mike Zimmer bluntly asserted he will not return to Schottenheimer’s coaching staff and would rather retire.
Fans react to Cowboys hiring Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator
With Schottenheimer becoming the new head coach and Eberflus as defensive coordinator, fans seem to have lost all faith in the team, citing a lack of efforts to equip the coaching staff as a significant concern. Additionally, Nick Sorensen is reportedly signing the deal for the special teams coordinator.

While some fans are optimistic about the potential impact, most of the fans are questioning the move, with one fan remarking, “Jerry Jones really hates cowboys fans doesnt he?” Another joined in to exclaim, “Years of mediocrity on the way!” Here are some of the fan reactions:

Quite the crew the Cowboys are assembling down there in Dallas. I wonder how all these coaches will mesh together into a cohesive unit. Hopefully he can fix what seems to be a strained relationship with Micah Parsons and the team.

Despite the mixed feelings, Eberflus’ familiarity with the franchise could prove beneficial. But that comes with a boatload of pressure, similar to the situation in Chicago with the No. 1 overall pick, unfortunately, Eberflus failed so he would need to deliver results under pressure to win over the fans.
