Despite making the blunder of five interceptions during the preseason, when Jerry Jones stated that Trey Lance would be part of the 53-man roster, it was widely assumed that he was going to back up Dak Prescott. As it turns out, besides Lance, the Cowboys had another signal-caller on the roster– Cooper Rush, who has officially been named the team’s backup quarterback.
NFL insider Ari Meriov reported on Monday that the Cowboys have officially made Rush the backup quarterback behind starting signal-caller Prescott, for the coming season according to head coach Mike McCarthy. This news confirms Lance once again will be their No. 3 quarterback despite his impressive performance in preseason (first half), which also earned him the respect of head coach McCarthy.
Trey Lance made tremendous strides and they want to continue to develop him. But Rush is QB2, as expected. All City DLLS’ Clarence Hill Jr. reported
Lance posted 73-of-113 for 662 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions in the preseason. However, where the third-string quarterback lacked regular season experience with the Cowboys on the field, Rush has started six of their games from 2021 to 2023 seasons.
Additionally, Lance would be entering the free agency market in next year’s offseason if he didn’t sign an extension with the Cowboys, like quarterback Prescott. If that happens, the No. 3 overall draft pick of the 2021 batch will hardly get a shot for the starting job as he didn’t play any regular season games in Dallas.
Fan reaction to Cowboys making Cooper Rush as backup over Trey Lance
Since the official news of the Cowboys’ backup quarterback hit the internet, it has been viewed in the respect of quarterback Lance. Fans mocked the 24-year-old by asking him to join UFL in order to earn more field time with the head coach, while some even felt bad for Lance’s missed opportunity in the backup role.
“Huge bust,” wrote a fan on social media, while another wrote, “That’s the most no shit statement ever lol everyone knows that would be the case.” Here are some of the fans’ reactions to the Cowboys’ big news.
It’s quite clear that the fans don’t like Lance’s position in the team as some even warned the team of making a big mistake by selecting Rush again as their starter. They also urged the Cowboys to make him the starting quarterback, while some wondered if the signal-caller had asked for separation following this.
