Cowboys not starting Cooper Rush in season finale to allegedly avoid paying him $250,000 contract incentive has Jerry Jones bamboozled, fans react – “This is pathetic”
Cooper Rush received $250,000 for playing over 45% of the offensive snaps this season but missed out on doubling it.

Cooper Rush may be on his way out of the Dallas Cowboys, potentially joining the Carolina Panthers, as the 31-year-old looks to extend his NFL career. The quarterback would lose his position as Dak Prescott returns to the AT&T Stadium next year atop their ungratefulness despite reviving the Cowboys playoff hopes at one point.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush stood to earn $500,000 in incentives if he played 55 percent of the team’s offensive snaps this season. However, that bonus is now out of reach after Dallas rushed to replace Rush with Trey Lance during Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders.
According to Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas has averaged approximately 68 offensive snaps per game this season. In case if the Cowboys managed to hit the same amount of snaps against the Washington Commanders, he would have reached 55.1% of the team’s offensive snaps for the season, qualifying for his incentive. However, instead of giving him the chance to earn the bonus, the team is prioritizing Lance’s playing time, effectively preventing Rush from meeting the requirement.
Following Dallas’ 23-19 loss that concluded their 2024 season with a 7-10 record, team owner and general manager Jerry Jones stated that he was unaware of the incentive.
“I didn’t even know about it. I didn’t even know about it until I read about it, so nothing at all. Those incentives are in there for the team. We put them in there so that if someone is, in his case, as the backup quarterback, has to play, he has the financial incentives. They’re usually put in there because of the people representing him. They should be. … He [Rush] did earn some pretty serious incentives this year.”
Rush kept Dallas competitive following Prescott’s injury, leading the team to a 4-4 record in his starts. He finished the season completing 60.7% of his passes for 1,844 yards and 12 touchdowns, with only five interceptions. Dallas also enjoyed a strong run, winning four of five games, highlighted by an impressive 34-26 road victory over the 11-win Washington Commanders.
Dallas fans unhappy with the team prioritising Trey Lance playing time at the eleventh hour over Cooper Rush
Jerry Jones has been centerstage in the season spotlight. The octogenarian owner of the Cowboys have found new ways to capture media attention including helicopter landings in field and revealing his dietary choices. In Cooper Rush’s case, Jerry Jones has feigned unawareness. Jones could feign all he wants but the fans aren’t sold on it.
The Cowboys have exploded on X calling out the Cowboys management.
I'm sorry I don't believe this for a second. This is also pathetic. 250,000 Jerry spends more than this on fuel landing a helicopter at the Star.

He definitely spends $250k on a lot of things pic.twitter.com/fzIFnIlrCO

I’m honestly contemplating leaving the Cowboys as a fan, all because of Jerry Jones.

He has become a nasty liar and a pathetic human being in his later years. They played Trey Lance to save the bonus money.

People gotta read into what the situation was. He already earned the $250,000 bonus but if he played today, it would’ve got him to the 50% threshold which way he gave him another $250,000 boys to reach 500,000. Jerry Jones knew this Mike McCarthy knew this everybody in the… pic.twitter.com/HPH16XKQjY

Wait. You are the President /CEO/Owner/and General Manager and did not know your back up quarterback contract?

So, as a business man, Jerry Jones should be aware that player agents will use this against him in contract negotiations. I don’t think he cares.

I’ve been a Cowboys fan my entire life, but the last 5-7 years have been more about Jerry Jones than football.

The on field product has been horrid.
I’m honestly surprised Joe Biden didn’t give him a participation medal with the rest.
The NFL as a whole is a self destructing…
As head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract ends, the Dallas Cowboys have a potential detour: keep or remove him. They also need to find solutions for their problems in 2024 – starting with signing free agents in lacking positions.
