The Dallas Cowboys have publicly affirmed their commitment to retaining star linebacker Micah Parsons, one of the NFL’s elite defensive talents. However, behind closed doors, the Cowboys have reportedly entertained the possibility of trading the 25-year-old superstar.

As he approached a lucrative second contract this offseason, the team had expressed confidence in keeping him as a cornerstone of their defense. Given Parsons’ impact on the field, extending his contract was a logical step for Dallas. However, it seems they are straying off the path.

According to NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, internal discussions have taken place regarding whether the franchise should commit to a massive payday for Parsons or explore the option of moving him for a significant return.

The duo also called back on Stephen Jones‘ ambiguous comment from last December.

Cowboys COO Stephen Jones told NFL.com in December that the team will study the wisdom of having so much money invested in so few players, but added: ‘I can’t imagine there’s a scenario where he’s not wearing a star on his helmet,’

Stephen Jones wrote

Micah Parsons is currently set to earn $24 million on his fifth-year option in 2025. Most superstar players who reach that stage of their rookie contracts typically secure a long-term extension before the option kicks in. If no deal is reached, Parsons would become an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

Over his first four NFL seasons, Parsons has been a dominant force, racking up 52.5 sacks while recording double-digit totals each year. His accolades include three All-Pro selections and four Pro Bowl appearances, solidifying his status as one of the league’s premier defensive players. Given his production and pedigree, Parsons would command an enormous return if Dallas chose to trade him.

Dallas Cowboys fans are dealt with one heartbreak after another

The Dallas Cowboys are very much likely to find themselves with dwindling fans as the seasons progress. The highly valued team had made a mess of its own only a few weeks earlier when they brought in Brian Schottenheimer. Fans were already upset at the team and the management for their controversial hiring choice.

Micah Parsons reportedly leaving the franchise has pushed the fans to the very edge of frustration.

The Dallas Cowboys are in dire need of a positive mark as their win-loss percentage decreases over every season. They have not touched the Vince Lombardi nor come even close in three decades. With yet another star player being on the outs, how is Jerry Jones trying to fix this is a question that largely looms.
