It has been four years since Trey Lance entered the NFL, and no one knows his ceiling or how good he actually is. Injuries and then the rise of Brock Purdy kept him out of the San Francisco 49ers team and subsequently offloaded to the Dallas Cowboys late last preseason.

Since then, Lance has remained the third-string quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. He did not see any game time in the 2023 regular season, but head coach Mike McCarthy decided to test the 24-year-old’s improvement.

On Sunday, the Cowboys traveled to the SoFi Stadium to play against the Los Angeles Rams in their preseason opener. Rush started the game, but after a couple of snaps, McCarthy sent Lance in.

He struggled from the start with the Rams blitz and found it difficult to use the pocket efficiently. One good example would be when the Cowboys had 4th and 6, Lance post-snap looked for an open teammate but saw none clear of their markers. So he decided to run the ball, but the Rams’ edge rushers snagged him.

Trey Lance’s underwhelming performance against the Rams in pre-season leaves fans unhappy

The Rams third-year practice squad linebacker Zach VanValkenburg grabbed hold of Lance’s legs as he tried to wriggle out. However, the Rams #51 tightly held onto the Cowboys quarterback, who fell down face-first on the ground.

Fans weren’t happy with his underwhelming display and wanted strict consequences imposed on him.

Trey Lance completed the day with 25 of 41 passes for 188 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 72 passer rating. The Cowboys scored 12 points on the back of 6 field goals from kicker Brandon Aubrey. The Rams only fielded Stetson Bennett, which was his first game in more than a year. Even though they won, Bennett was woeful with 24 completions, 1 touchdown, and 4 interceptions.

Lance will not get many opportunities like this coming his way. He has the preseason to prove himself that he deserves a roster spot and perhaps even the backup quarterback position over Rush. For that, he needs to make good use of the remaining 2 games, starting with a trip to Sin City to face the Las Vegas Raiders next weekend.
