The Boston Red Sox-Alex Bregman era has officially come to an end. On Saturday, the 3rd baseman signed a 5-year, $175 million deal with the Chicago Cubs. Hours after this deal, the team’s Chief Baseball Officer, Craig Breslow, broke his silence and made some remarks regarding him, which did not sit well with the fans.

Last season, Bregman was the marquee signing of the Red Sox. After becoming a free agent, the player joined the AL East side on a 3-year, $120 million deal which had an opt-out clause after the 2025 season.

His arrival in Boston did spark some trouble behind the scenes. The team wanted him to play the 3rd base position. However, at that time, Rafael Devers had occupied that spot.

The Dominican International would refuse to give up this position. After internal discussions, manager Alex Cora would name Bregman as the 3rd baseman of the team and made Devers the designated hitter (DH).

In June, the team would back Bregman and trade away Devers to the San Francisco Giants. This sent major shockwaves across the MLB as Devers was in the second year of his gigantic 10-year, $313.5 million deal.

After the Red Sox suffered elimination at the hands of the New York Yankees, reports emerged that Bregman would opt-out of his deal and test free agency once again.

Following several speculations and rumors, Bregman ended up joining the Cubs. The 2-time World Series winner joined them on a 5-year, $175 million deal, which included a full no-trade clause and opt-outs.

The Red Sox had offered him a 5-year, $165 million deal. However, the team were unwilling to give him a full no-trade clause, which reportedly became a sticking point in their negotiations.

In an interview with Chris Cotillo of MassLive, Craig Breslow shared his immediate thoughts on Bregman’s deal with the Cubs. While he expressed that the team was a bit disappointed to see him go, he pointed out that the 3-time All-Star had earned the right to decide what was best for his future.

Without getting into the specifics of the negotiation, Alex and his family earned the right to decide where they want to spend the next five years of his career, and while we had hoped it would be here, we respect the right they’ve earned.

In a post on X, Baseball is Dead podcast host and Red Sox fan Jared Carrabis went wild and did not hold back on the team. In an NSFW rant, he would call it one of the biggest f*** ups by a team after losing both Devers and Bregman.

Tell me you didn’t love the contract or the defense at third. Fine. But trading Rafael Devers in a salary dump just to accommodate a one-year pillow contract for Alex Bregman before he signed elsewhere will go down as one of the biggest f*** ups in professional sports history.

The Red Sox are also the only team that has not signed a major league free agent this offseason. With Bregman gone, the team will now likely start looking at some free agents and even explore some trade deals to fill up the void left following his departure.
